Front end noise

Went to Portland today and I noticed a weird noise I think it is coming from the left front tire area. Starts to make noise around 35 and seems to quite down a lot around 55 or 60. Sounds like a rubber bushing squealing, not metallic sounding What does a wheel bearing going out sound like? :'( If i stop for 5 minutes or so it won't do it until a little while later down the road Any idea's??

Re:Front end noise

Got on the chat line and got some idea's. I think it is the front u-joints. When i turned it by hand i heard a squeking noise :'( I think this is it It's not a grinding noise! Gonna remove the front drive shaft and see if it still does it and if not, New u-joints for me 8)

Question? Does the front drive shaft turn when you drive in 2 wheel drive?

Re:Front end noise

I'm pretty sure the front driveshaft does not turn in 2WD, unless there's a problem with the CAD.

Sounds like you already found out what wheel bearing noise sounds like, but for the sake of the rest of the readers, it usually sounds like growling and/or grinding, getting worse with speed.

Re:Front end noise

Where does the noise come from? Without the engine running you really should be able to pinpoint where the noise is coming from. You turned the yoke with the shaft out, right?

Chris (TORQUIN)

Re:Front end noise

Does the noise stop when you put the brakes on?

Mine was making a similar noise, but when I pressed the brakes it would stop. Turns out I had to brake pads left and it was grinding into the rotors. To me, it should be just the opposite (makes noise when I brake and not when I'm driving), but thats what they told me.

Re:Front end noise

Is there any way you can get it on a lift someplace, put it in 4x4 and drive, and lift it to listen for the problem area?

Alternatively:
Pull the left-front wheel. Compress the caliper so the pads are not touching the rotor. This can be done with a pry bar between the pad the the rotor. Be careful not to damage the pads themselves.
Once you have the rotor free of the pads, rotate it and wiggle it side to toside/up and down. There should be some play of the bearings are bad. If they are just dry there may not be any play, but if it is the bearings they should have some play in them by now, especially if it is getting louder.

You can also bit the bullet and pull the hub then split it to see what's up with the bearings. You'll need a 2 3/8 or 2 5/16 socket for the axle nut. I don't remember which.

If anyone else has any ideas, speak up.

Chris

It's fixed It's fixed It's fixed It's fixed It's fixed

I am so happy

Turned out to be the hud assembly
Cost me $233 for the hub from NAPA, $16.99 for the 1 and 11/16 socket from sears, and $19.99 for a 3/4 inch drive breaker bar! Tried to use my 1/2 inch breaker bar with a adapter Broke quicker that you know what ;D

Alaska here i come 8)
