Found out my anti lock brakes don't work the hard way!
Re:Found out my anti lock brakes don't work the hard way!
I "tested" my ABS in the same situation as you just last week, but I was going slower, around 25. But it worked great, I was amazed I stopped in time, thought for sure I was going to hit the car in front of me. I really stomped on the brake HARD!
THe tires made some noise, but not the skidding noise, more like they were getting maximum grip/friction just before skidding, like they are designed to do. If your rears lock up you
will not stop faster than if you have good working ABS. ABS does not lengthen stopping distance in an emergency.
I have also felt what you guys are talking about going over bumps, but when you stomp on that brake pedal like Hoss Cartwright on a bed bug it's a different story, if your ABS works properly.
Re:Found out my anti lock brakes don't work the hard way!
Found out on the way to the Big Rig Nationals about my 4wheel antilocks and a slightly damp road. Had to hit them hard when "quick light" got me and didn't want to lose **ICEMAN** who was following me. Well I almost made it through the intersection with full peddle pressure and the feeling that I had left the brakes at home. Luckly no-one hit me and **ICEMAN** left me enough space to back up (red face and all). Personally I think antilocks "STINK"

And we all know that when several CTDs are running in a caravan (caraRAM
), they always travel the posted speed limit......right?

At least, not in theory. Follow me, here. ABS works by pulsing the brakes faster than you could yourself. This keeps the wheels from locking, and keeps you in control.

ABS is designed to help you keep control of the vehicle NOT TO SHORTEN STOPS!!! ABS WILL shorten stops compared to a wheels-locked powerslide. BUT, compared to a properly operated standard braking system (with a skilled driver) ABS will take LONGER to stop.

The problem is that very FEW drivers (I am not one of them) can apply the right amount of brake pressure to ride that ragged edge between max braking and wheel lock.

So ABS is mostly designed FIRST to maintain control, and to make consistent stops idiot-proof.

The generalization that ABS will shorten stopping distance is a MYTH.

If it DID enhance maximum braking, you can bet they would use it in racing-- and they don't.

ABS technology probably WILL get to the point, though, were it actually does shorten stopping distances, and it will be used for high-performance, not just safety.

HOHN
Re:Found out my anti lock brakes don't work the hard way!
Another point to remember is that ABS is designed to give you the ability to
steer around an obstacle instead of running into it with wheels/brakes at full lock.
The Public Service announcement:
To use ABS properly
1* STOMP on the pedal as hard as you can
2* STAY on it, don't let up when the pedal starts pulsing
3* STEER around the obstacle.
They sould have added
4* STOP following the other vehicle so closely so you don't have to depend on technology to save you.
Yeah I know.....Stuff happens........... :
