anti-lock brakes problems

Man, these antilock brakes stink. The roads were slick this morning and if you hit the brakes at all the front locked and the rear did nothing. I actually had to throw it into reverse one time to stop or else hit someone. Is there anyway to make the brakes work even or are mine just screwed up.

Have you upgraded to the Cheby 1 ton wheel cylinders? If not I highly suggest doing so, that way they can all lock up at once.

It's like I got brakes and then all of the sudden the back just quits working. No I haven't done the switch yet on the wheel cylinders but I plan to or just switch to disk on the rear. It's what controls the antilock that concerns me. Is there any adjustment to it. Any help would be appreciated.

Well for the $30 invested I'd surely give the wheel cylinders a try, they are supposed to make a huge difference. I don't believe there is any type of adjustment to the ABS unit.

Sounds like it's time to tear into the rear brakes... When's the last time you adjusted them?

Part of the improvement on my brakes was from the cylinders, but a large part of it was the adjustment of the shoes... the rears grabbed TOO well for a while...

Well, I guess maybe I haven't adjusted them since I bought the truck. Maybe the trouble with the brakes is the idiot at the wheel. I think I'll pull the wheels and check them out instead of bitchin. Maybe see if the parts store has wheel cylinders to and just do some maintenance on the old dog. What years did chevy use the big cylinders?

I'm not sure (I'd guess 88-98 would be the same) which year but if you have a local Napa, here is the part number. Napa #4637337
