So I was wondering how many more miles I can drive before it's really empty. My light went on at 370 miles, since then I drove another 7 miles. I still have 1/8th on the gas gauge.

 

I went by how many gallons were left in the tank after i filled it up. If the light comes on and you fill it with 28 gallons, and you have a 34 gallon tank 6 gallons left x your average MPG should give a pretty good idea on your range. I have gone as far as 100 miles on the light.

 

Wow I get that before I hit 1/4 tank why the low fuel milage?

 

The real question is how many gallons are left in your tank when it hits 1/4.
Every truck seems to be different.
Both mine have about 5 gallons left when they hit empty.

 

the real, real, question is how much of that last gallon or two you can actually pick up.

 

Partially cause its auto, driving in 4WD a few miles (streets were icy) and probably needs a tune up. It's too cold outside so I can't really mess with it until spring. Oh ya, mine is completely stock also, except exhaust brake

are you wantng to run out of fuel?? these trucks are known to have bad sending units in the tank........i ran out going across nevada pulling my fifth wheel trailer. i had 50 gallons in my aux tank waiting to transfer when the guage went below 1/4 tank, but it never did

 

Well, I don't know for sure how many miles you can go, but I had the low fuel light come on in the middle of South Dakota at 3 in the morning. Drove 60 or so miles to the next town pulling a 30 foot stock trailer. Put in 35.2 gallons. Bought an auxiliary tank on the way home...lol

 

I always check my fuel level by crosschecking mileage at certain points: 100 miles the needle comes off "F", 200 miles the needle is at 3/4 tank, 300 miles it is a half a tank, 400 miles at 1/4 tank, 500 miles or so and the light comes on, 600 miles and I'm walking. Or soon will be. The farthest I went was about 630 miles on one tank....

 

I once got hit with bad headwinds pulling a tall 5ver, the fuel was just disappearing and nowhere to refill. I finally hit my destination and filled up, I had 3 liters left in the tank. I now carry a 5 gallon jug of fuel when towing.

 

Running a VP-44 equipped truck down to fumes is bad Ju-Ju.

The VP is cooled by the excess fuel that is pump from the tank, with the warmed fuel returning to the tank to mix with the "cooler" fuel before it's pumped forward again.

Running the tank low, means the hot fuel has less time to cool before it's sent through the VP again.

Personally, I try to refill at around 1/2 tank.
And on a long road trip I usually carry anywhere form 1 to 6 five gallon jugs of fuel (Poor Man's Auxiliary Fuel Tank).

 

I know I'm bad but I've done that same stretch of hwy many times pulling the same trailer and usually have at least 1/4 tank left
