fair price for a 98'

I have a 98' 2500 4x4 standard cab long bed I am reluctant to sell. I answered an ad from craigslist for "wanted 98 dodge diesel" I asked what he would pay. (total shot in the dark) He sent me back an email, and I have otherwise found out he is the auto shop coordinator for plymouth state college. He wants to turn the truck into a project veggie burning truck. He told me he wouldnt be able to pay more than book value which is currently 7100. I dont really want to part with the truck, But I have since been looking at some nice 3rd gens that are in my price range. What would be a good price for the truck assuming it is in good condition. It has no rust and no problems to speak of, other than the truck is a worktruck. And needs a bath. new bfg's and brakes, valve adjustment just done, #5 plate, 165,000 on the ticker. Thanks.

No idea, as prices vary depending on region. My advice is two fold; look on auto trader to find what the average price is, then double it. That way you will most likely hang onto your 98 12v, and if it does sell, atleast you made some good coin off of it.

I am looking for a nice four door. I am not finding any first gens. second gens are easier to come by, but pricey. The third gens are very plentiful and in my pricerange. I am looking at the 12v for reliability. Would it be a bad idea to ask for and get 8000? I bought the truck from a guy late last year for 5000. And he had no idea what he was selling. He bought it new for his boat, then bought a chevy gasser. So I do know there is a profit here even after new tire costs and brakes, ect. Tate you seem to have your finger on the pulse what do you think? I have priced trucks in the area and they have rust issues if they are 10 years or older. and still fetch 6-7. mine is rust free.

Its all regional. I bought my 12v last year for $12k, and at the time, that was market price for it. Since you paid $5k for it, anything above that is money in your pocket.
