exhaust rust-out

Just wondering if anyone else has had the problem of muffler rotting out earlier than expected. I have only have 3 years on the vehicle, 2500 diesel, 63000 miles and the pipes are still great. I thought the systems on the dodges were SS. I have a couple of friends that have 1998 and 1999 dodges and they have original systems. ?? Thanks

Most people on here would jumping for joy if they knew they had to replace their exhaust . No, stock systems arent SS. You can get SS or aluminzed steel in 4"/5" straight or muffled. Personally, i would go with a new 4" system. Helps the truck breathe(cooler egts) and sounds like a real truck. I got my complete 4" straight system for under $350 bucks from Rips.

The dealer told me it was SS but my tail pipe rotted off so...
I think the down pipe to the resonator was a poor quality SS but not the rest

I don't think anything prior to '03 had stainless, but factory muffler grade stainless is not the same grade as aftermarket types - I think there are at least two different types of stainless for replacement. I could be wrong but this is what I have read elsewhere. BTW, my truck has almost 300k and is original

Morning Members,

All the 24 valve exhaust systems were aluminized steel. You would not believe how many 4 and 5 inch performance systems we sell just due to the factory systems rusting out. The owners check with the dealer and find out a replacement system is 600.00 or more and then they check our systems that start at 358.00 for a mandrel bent aluminized 4 inch system with a real diesel muffler. Then again we also have T-409 and T-304 in singles and dual systems. Give us a call if we can help you.

Thanks for all the replys. I did replace w/ a ss from magnaflow and it does sound great. Also seems to spin up quicker when starting out. I guess its breathing easier.
