Cruise Control
Cruise Control
I have 97' 3500 5.9 auto. When I set my cruise control, it takes a hold, then accelerates 5, 10, 15 mph. Someone told me to replace the speed control servo, and could have an internal vacuum valve leaking. Does anyone know about this? Can I get the parts and do it myself? Thanks

Doug

Welcome to the site

Anytime you have had your batteries disconnected, the cruise control has to relearn. If this is your case, all you have to do is give it time to relearn by setting it on the road driving steady. You should notice a change after 10 or 12 sets.

Mine does this [not quite as bad as yours] everytime the batteries are disconnected.

I do not think your problem is the servo.

Dan
Re:Cruise Control
Dan,
Thanks for the tip, but I haven't had the batteries disconnected. It's been doing this for about 6 months, and I've set the cruise hundreds of times. Thanks again for your insight to possibly solving the problem.

Doug

There are several things that could cause this.
The first thing I would do is disconnect and reconnect any connection in the cruise circuit. The one that seems to cause the most problem is the connector at the vaccuum servo.
Your problem sounds like it is a simple fix, if you can find it. I would not start changing parts just yet.
The connector at the servo is still the most likely. Just not making good contact. My previous truck had a problem simular to yours and it was this connector.
Hope this helps, if not post back.

Re:Cruise Control
There's a TSB about the cruise control having an "adaptive learning" strategy. It mentions only 1994-1996 model years, but my 1998 and 2002 have both done what it describes to some extent.

http://www.dodgeram.info/tsb/1995/08-16-95A.htm
Re:Cruise Control
I thought that I was just imagining things when my 97 did this exact sme thing. Just came across this post but i've been noticing this for a while when on the interstate.

Re:Cruise Control
This is kind of a guess, but I think the TSB might only cover those years because the info appears in the manual for later years. I know my 2002 mentions it in the section about the cruise.
Re:Cruise Control
I had same problem with mine replace cruise control servo corrected problem. When I set it now it stays at set speed now. Not a hard job to replace remove left battery and remove bracket nuts on underside of fender after you figure that out not bad.
