Copying a key from a 96 2500

I have a 96 2500 Ram that I need to get some extra keys made for. This weekend I locked the keys in my truck and my only spare was 3 hrs away. So, I went to get more keys made at Lowe's today and the guy told me his scanner said is was a key with a chip in it. He said he couldn't make one that would start the truck, he could just make it to open the door. Is that right? If so, do you guys go to the dealer for keys, or can other lock shops do it cheaper?

Horsehockey....a chipped key in a 96? I dont think so. I had a regular key cut for my 98 - works just fine.

No probs on my 99 having copies made at Lowes. I've come to realize that when people don't want to help or are lazy they make excuses that their equipment is "broken, not capable, or won't work." Unless the key has a small black insert in it at the base then there is no chip in the key. They might not of had the correct key stock to cut it.

Dodge uses a clor code on keys. The black ones are just keys. The gray ones are chipped keys.

And they are not like the GM keys you see the chip on the key, it's built into the plastic.
