Coolant Flush and Change

Hello.

I'm getting ready to flush my cooling system and change my antifreeze. I was wondering if any of you guys might know anything about the Walmart brand Super Tech Heavy Duty Antifreeze. I've been using Fleet Charge Antifreeze with my truck in the past, but I was trying to do the job a little cheaper this time. Here is a link to the Super Tech antifreeze I'm thinking about using this time. It seems to have everything listed that Cummins recommends for these engines. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I don't really want to jump in on this, but you've gone a week with no answer.

I found this interesting article about why classes of ingredients are, and are not, used in various types of coolant. Don't take it on its own - I suggest you do more research. For our engines, I don't think the presence of nitrates would be a problem (except that aluminum radiators apparently don't like them) - the nitrates (according to that article) would be good for preventing corrosion. The SuperTech says that it has corrosion protection, though - I guess there are some other additives in the ST for corrosion protection. Bottom line - I suspect you'd be okay with the ST. I don't know about it's compatibility with the Fleet Charge, as I know nothing about that coolant. Fleet Charge may have multiple formulations. Since you mentioned flushing, get all the old out that you can, and check for compatibility with the Fleet Charge formulation you were using.

When it's at all convenient, a coolant flush/change is one canned job I will happily outsource to the quicky lube guys. The mess and disposal bs when I do it, is a bigger job lol.

I replaced the stock antifreeze with Prestone green years back...again when I replaced my heater core. When I got my truck it had the red/pink Cummins antifreeze in it and that was what was corroded into my heater core when pulled. I did a complete flush the first time by pointing it downhill a bit and running the hose thru the thermostat hole while idling until it ran clear.

The petcock is a pain,,,turn about 90 degrees and pull straight back IIRC!

U2slow makes a good point also...
