I wait until my pyrometer reads 300 degrees, doesn't take long unless it's been working real hard.

 

Steve is right. The consencence is 300 degrees or 3 mins. Get youself an extra key, lock it up and run. You'll be back in 5 mins and ready to go anyway.

Get yourself some gauges, and when the egt's drop to 300 it is time to shut her down.

 

And truth be known, I was never much of a wrench anyway. Are the EGT guage's hard to install? What would be a fair price on having it done somewhere? Thanks guys. Varmint...

Question: I tow a trailer during the summer. Is there any special cooldown needed?

Cummins Service Manager: If you are towing heavy loads this summer, you should let the engine idle for a three- to five-minute cooldown after extended full-throttle or high-power operation. However, under normal driving conditions like simply exiting a highway, a cooldown isn’t needed.

 

I just hit the cool down timer 1 to 5 times depending on if I was towing or not and then head off to the head and let the truck idle until the timer shuts it off...

with how fast someone can steal a car, I don't think locking the spare set in it would be the safest choice!

I think that Tony uses a different cool down timer than the one I have, but the basic principal is a timer that will allow the engine to run for a pre-selected time period after you turn the ignition off and remove the key in order to let the temp cool, then, it shuts it off. You can CLICK HERE to read an article about the cool-down turbo timer, which is like the one that I have on my truck. This timer is designed and built by a fellow DTR member, who also has an advertisment on our site and I have been very happy with its performance as well as others.

 

There is a bunch of different ones....everyone seems to like the advertised timer, i think its www.cool-downtimer.com , I use a crimestopper remote start with turbo timer becuase i didn't want the large cool down timer, i just use a little momentary push button i mounted on the steering column. What they do is allow you to set the timer for a certain time, take your key out, lock it up, let it cool itself down, and forget about it.

I've got the Turbo Diesel Life Saver that Geno's Garage sells. Everything is hidden behind the dash except for a little button next to the steering column and a kill switch hidden off in another location. It's nice, 'cause I get sick of sitting there staring at the Pyro!

The most difficult part of the EGT gauge install is drilling and tapping the exhaust manifold. You can get a boost and EGT gauge for a couple hundred, install shouldn't be much over $50. If you can find a local member you could probably get it done for dinner or a 12 pack.
