Angry a/c problems need help

ok so i went to have my a/c recharged the guy said it only had half a pound of freon in it so he recharged the system them went to fill it back up and looked at me and told me that it had a block in the system but the compressor was running just fine. also it was blowing freezing air out of the vents. if there is somebody in the corpus christi texas area that would be able to look at it and give me a trustworthy answer i would really appreciate it hopefully i wont have to spend 1800 dollars on the a/c system.

If there's a blockage in the system, it would NOT be running fine.

what's freezing?
there is a table that define acceptable outlet air temp based on ambient air temps..

I would find a different a/c shop..like the other poster saying..if it plugged its not working fine..

Look for a better tech to look at it. If there is a blockage it will not give cold air out of the vents and the comp will not run properly. the high side pressures should be to high and low would be to low. Proper vent temp could not be acheved

ok the one a/c guy that worked on mine said the same thing, the guy i use now said these trucks have to have a fan in front when idling and working on the a/c to push air into the condensor like you are driving, my a/c freezes me out now

well awhile back i had an aux fan on the front on a switch and when i turned the a/c on i would turn the fan on so back to what i said before when he was recharging it i felt cold air coming out and the compressor was working just fine so did this guy try and rip me off or what should i put an aux fan back on the front and recharge the system back to specs and add a can of stop leak to the system and never look back or what the south texas heat doesnt bother me but a lil a/c now and then would make my girlfriend happier

My gut feel?
I'd go find another shop... In a hurry!

I usually have done my own A/C work and I cringe when I hear of some of the royal "scalping" (polite term) that goes on with auto A/C services nowdays.
Most people (me too) can't afford the exorbitant prices they charge for A/C work these days. ( my '83 GMC blew a compressor and I sweatted it out for about 2 months before I jumped in and replaced it and converted it from R12 to R134a)

Even lately, I see a lot of folks driving around in this town with their windows down in this brutal heat and "humility" because I'm sure they can't afford to drop $2000 on their A/C.
$1800-2000 would buy a lot of fuel!!!

IF, your high side was way too high it might indicate a blocked expansion orifice only if it was accompanied by little or no cooling. If it was cooling as you say, and high side pressures were still excessive, it could be (most likely) an indication of insufficient airflow across the condenser, or even overcharged. Point that truck into our stiff Southeast breezes and check it again.

A Recommendation: DON'T add any cans of 134a refrigerant that includes any "Leak Sealer" because that stuff CAN cause problems. If that's already been done previously, then DEFINITELY don't add any more sealer! Just buy the cans of straight R134a. If youve got a persistant leak, the straight 134a won't add to your problems like additional sealer can cause.

If you're comfortable with learning to service it yourself, go down to Harbor Freight and pick up a set of R134a guages. It's a nice set, complete with a pair of hose dry disconnects with needle valves! (got mine for $39 on sale!)
FYI, The temp scales are in Degrees C though, but the quality is definitely worth the price.

There's enough folks here that could probably help diagnose what's wrong if you are comfortable with using a set of mobile A/C guages to do the legwork.

also make sure your condensor and radiator is not plugged up around the fins restricting air flow.
truck needs to be idled up pretty good not like it would be just sitting at a stop light. that will affect the pressures, the faster the engine is turning the faster the compressor turns , which circulates the freon faster.

if you look at the pressures at normal idle, it may indicate the charge is suffecient. but once you get the rpms up to highway speed it is pumping faster and if it is low on freon, it will short cycle and not supply enough freon to the evaporator to absorb heat.

the place i used last year said my high side was too high and i needed the oriface replaced which on our trucks is a long expensive line from the dealer, this year I used a new guy that put a fan in front of the truck while he was charging it and the pressures came down and it was actualy low so it was topped off and was low again a few days later, he then leak tested each part overnight and it came down to the compressor or the part in the dash ( he couldn't test them) so he topped it off with stop leak and refrigerant and it works fine just have a bang noise when I first turn on the a/c like the compressor is stuck which makes me think it was the compressor leaking so the stop leak went there.

he said when he was in a/c school these are aparently one of the vehicles that you must place a fan in front while working on the a/c to keep air flowing across the condensor since there is a gap between the rad and condensor/intercooler

you may not be intentionaly ripped off, person just may not be trained properly, anyone can use the gauges and a/c machine the key is knowing the right way to use them

also look at the front of the radiator make sure there is not a big black ring of dirt opposite the fans location like 2 busy said

Tom's right...
Without knowing how he serviced your vehicle, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he just doesn't know what he was doing exactly...
Either way it is time to move on...
(Just don't mop the floor with the dude without really conclusive proof. )
