Brake Problem...
I bought my 1996 2500 new. I have had a brake problem since day one. The problem is that when using the brake for the first time of the day the rear brakes lock up with a bang. After that first hit everything is fine for the rest of the day.
This time when the fronts needed to be replaced I decided to do the rears also. I replaced everything in the rear from shoes to wheel cylinders to new drums. The wheel seals are okay, no leaking.
The first few days were fine, then the same old symptoms returned.
Any ideas?

I had same problem. I replaced the drums, shoes, and installed the GM wheel cylinders PN37337. Since then all has been great. Most of my driving is in traffic unloaded so that wheels locking up got a bit dangerous. I also took the time to bleed the back lines. Keeping them adjusted seems to make a pretty big difference as well.
YMMV

Sounds like a bad brake proportioning valve or you have installed a set of overkill rear brake shoes.I had done some research on the rear brake shoes and was told by a man who was alot wiser than me to utilize the cheapest, softest rear shoes you could find. This would keep the rear from doing this and allow them to not harden and become grabby when applied.
So when I did my first brake job I installed Carbomets up front and used the cheapest Napa shoe on the rear.I also had the drums replaced due to heat cracking and since then I have had zero issues with the rears doing this or being grabby.
As for adjustment of the rears...
If your self adjusters are in working order, simply backing up and applying the brakes a few times will allow them to stay in proper adjustment......Andy

This is very common in humid/rainy areas, the drums flash rust overnight. About the only thing you can do is be aware of it and use your brakes in a non-critical area first thing to scrape the rust off.
