Brake issues round..... 3
Brake issues round..... 3
Ok. so the first round i saw coming from when i bought the truck. Ended up just doing both hubs rotors and capilers because the truck sat for ever and was very rusty.
4 months went by and about 3 days ago a brake line blew out on the pass. side. i replaces the whole line so i knew it would not do it again. that was round 2.
Now today while i was driving the truck i had to get one the brakes a bit and i noticed it pulled to the left. thought it was a freak thing so i didnt worry to much. hit the brakes hard again and the same thing. So i went out on an open road with no traffic and got up to about 45 and hit the brake hard. Truck pulled hard left into on coming traffic... i tried the same thing again and it does it EVERYTIME!!!! both calipers are less then 4 months old!! what the hell is going on!!!
I have put SO much money into the front end and i still have problems. Im seriously thinking about selling the truck
because i cant stand or afford all the issues that keep coming up. It only has 39k on it and the body is so nice for a northern truck.
Can i just replace the rubber lines or am i out 2 calipers again?? Any help is welcome. Sorry for the long post
Thanks

Its about diagnostics , it could be a number of things , the alignment could be off , there could be an issue with the brake hose , whats more common there is that a flap of rubber acts as a valve in side .
Another thing could be , is the valve that helps keep some braking when you lose hydrolic pressure in system , like when the line blew , the last of the pressure snaps a valve in system to one side , allowing some braking to continue with the remaining 2 wheels .
The valve in question , isolates opocent front & rear wheels , one of each - on different sides .

My bet would be on a collapsed brake hose, especially after setting up for so long,,,, I would also flush the whole brake system and put in fresh fluid after changing both hoses.
Same thing with my rig... I blew the passenger side line and replaced the whole thing. Jamm the brake pedal and the truck yanks to the left... Whats happening is the driver side caliper is getting pressure immediately and there is a slight delay to the passenger side... Why , I dunno.. If I put a little pressure on the pedal first and then jamm it... It won't pull... Maybe some air still in there ? Maybe the line needs to be fatter? I'm dealing with it for now and I just don't get on peoples asses and use a little more caution to avoid having to slam the pedal home... If I do, I just turn the wheel to the right at the same time...
Thanks for the response guys. I think here in the next few weeks im going to replace both rubber lines and see if that makes a difference. Also going to have an alignment done it too see if that helps any..
Wicked- did you notice that the new line you put on had a smaller inside diameter then the org.? Whe i went ot o'reallys to get the new line the smallest was a little smaller then the factory but the next size up was way to big???
Pull- how hard would it be to flush the whole system?? I have two new 30mm rear wheel cylenders that i have not yet put on so i coudl do it then if it not hard..
Anyone else???

you could have other things causing a pull, low tire pressure in one side or the other, as litle as 10psi will cause a pull, front end parts wore out, even the rears out of adjustment will cause a pull.
jack up the front, have some one hit the brakes and release the pedal as you rotate the wheel to confirm that the brakes actually applied and released! if one is not then fiqure out why, ie bad flex line etc
good luck

Those rubber hoses cause problems. Ive been told to change them a few times. Inside they may brake down, specially if you let the caliper hang when workin on front end. The rear brakes should be checked because they will cause pullin to one side or the other also. Make sure that there adjusters are workin and adjust them with the rear end in the air. Spin the wheel and adjust them out till they have a slight drag on both sides. I've also heard about the thing that happens when a brake line blows. There is a valve that will trip when this happens. It will stop brake fluid from goin to front or back, which ever broke. There may be one that does this from side to side at each axle, i don't know. I am not sure how to reset this, but am guessing that when you bleed the brakes you will notice if one isn't pumpin the fluid like the other. Alignment, and tire pressure can also do this. Also make sure everything else in the front end is tight. All ball joints, track bar, all steering parts, wheel bearings. Hope you get it figured out. Nothin worse than driving a truck you don't feel safe in.

Oh, forgot to mention, make sure the front pads are wearing the same inside and out. Some times you gotta take the brakes apart and clean the sliders. The metal ones that go on before you put the caliper back on. And the ones with the alen head on them you use to hold the brakes on.
And just so ya'll know... EVERY front end part on my truck is new or near new ! Just had it aligned last week ! Tire pressure is the same. She still pulls... It's the fluid getting to the passenger side a little late.... Where are these so called check valves ?
Have you adjusted the rears properly? or verified that the rear slave cyl are not siezed? not all front end pull is related to the front brakes (although flex lines can and do cause your issue) 20 plus yrs a mechanic and I've never seen a check valve on a brake system, proportion valve yes, no check valve, proportion valve controls front and rear bias, not side to side bias
The valve I am thinking about [ but not remembering the name of ] is a federal safety deal , there has been one on almost every car I have worked on [ over 30 of auto repair ] , if there is a break in the hyd. system , line or hose , going to any one wheel , then its spouse to force a valve to close off the system to the side that leaks , giving some breaking to one front & one rear wheel , opposite sides .
If that gets tripped like when you popped a rusted line , to reset , you have to repair the leak , bleed the system , then press very hard on the peddle , if everything is working correctly , the valve gets forced to center , giving pressure to all 4 wheels , its possible that sludge can keep the valve form returning , that would mean that you get full braking to only one front wheel .

Line blew while i had the front end in the air. I was changing to my summer tires and had my buddy hold the brake while i tightened up the lug nuts. He got in hit the pedal and foot went to the floor and fluid ****** everywhere!
my rears are fine and both are adjusted properly. everything on the front is in good. pads are wearing fine and i put anti-seeze on the slides before installing them.

I was gonna suggest lubing the slides but I see you already did that.
My thinking is along the lines of air in the system from your earlier issues with the brake lines blowing out. I would try flushing the system first and then addressing the more complicated issues like caliper sticking and alignment.

One of the more common causes of brake pull on BR trucks is overheated front pads. Sometimes it only takes one hard stop to cause this. To diagnose, simply switch the front brake pads from one side to the other, then test drive to see if it pulls the other way.
