Powder River I think makes a pretty good one or you can use round tubing to make one probably easier to buy one. Tractor Supply usaully sells them if ther is one in your area.

I have tried those but with all the acid in cow poopiee they rust out fast. I was looking for one that would resist rusting but be strong. We have one that we got for free and has lasted for 6 years. I think it is made out of used Durajunk heads

We use cheap square tubing ones that I painted before stuffing out in the corrals. Going on 7 years now, and as long as you take the time every couple of weeks to pull it out of the built up waste hay, they stay in good shape.

We only feed calves in round feeders these days. The cows get fed in fenceline feeders that I pile hay in front of and push the bales into the feeder once every couple days. Much less waste as the cows tend to stand with their heads in the feeders versus grabbing a mouthful and backing out.

Rod

I read in the paper today some bad new's for you guys that work cattle for a living.
Seems the Govt. is going to ban those round bales of hay because of a study they did on them. The multi million dollar study came to the conclusion that because of ROUND bales of hay, the cattle are simply not getting a SQUARE meal anymore.

There used to be an old man that made them and sold them through Southern States around here. They are made from some type of oval tubing. I bought 3 three of them either 14 or 15 years ago and other than a little of the paint is gone , you can't tell that they are hardly used at all.
I don't pull them out in the summer and get them off the ground.
I payed about half again as much for them when I bought them but it was worth it.
You get what you pay for.

: Eddie : 8)

We just bought a new one made of galvanized tubing. It is easy to stand up and roll over the bale. The main advantage is that the cows can push it around to get the hay in the middle.

We used to have one made of angle iron and the angle tended to dig in as the cows tried to push it around to get the last of the hay. When it dug in, it would get all bent up.

Here is what we do, unroll the hay so the whole herd eats in line. There is not much waste and they don't lay on it, due to the fact that is it unrolled and whole herd eats at the same time. We drop the roll off on it side and use the front weight of the tractor to push it and unroll itself as you push it along. It is much simply for us this way, works for alot of people down my way. Some even have the unroller on the 3 point hitch and uses hydaulics to unroll as you drive along. We rotote the herd all winter long so with the bale hoops we would be moving them all the time with the herd.

Re:Round bale hoops?
If you feed enough cows to consume at least one bale a day , I would try Cattle Haulers method . That's the way I do it and there is little waste , certainly as little as any way you can feed round bales short of grinding it all and feeding in a bunk .
If the bale is really round and tight you may not even need to push it with your tractor . I set them up on a big sidehill if the weather is not bad , cut the twine if it is still good and give it a push . You have to unroll the bale the same direction it was rolled up and it works slicker than deer guts on a pump handle ............ HehHeh
