That´s what I did, and if you´re to learn from me, don´t place yourself under it when you cut it, it is kinda heavy, I learned.
But mine was bad from the cat back, so I made a new pipe with some 3" from my local shop.

I did a friends years back (mine is still stock until after camping season) and all i did was unbolted what I could then cut it just ahead of the cat or whatever it is- then I just cut the new 3" pipe at a slight angle to fit the off set perfectly. THe 12v is pretty loud... im looking for a good sounding muffler that wont break the bank.

why not go for a 4" turbo back set up and hang onto the cat, i put one on mine and it made a big difference, better spool up cooler running. a 5.9 = roughly a 350 ci running through 3"
pipe is pretty choked up, with the 4" engine breathes much better without to much noise added.
