On & Off Tail lights-could H/Light switch cause this?

Well I was quite supprised when a county sheriff stopped me at night a while back, and said I didn't have a tail lights. He was very helpfull & I said I would stop in the next town, and check it out. the lights came back on. When driving the 8 miles to the next town, I could see the t/l's would come on then off..I turned the dash lights down to almost zero & the lights stayed on all the time..this may not be connected at all, but I was wondering if a faulty headlamp switch would cause this? I've replaced that switch twice, with a used one over the last few years..otherwise, yes I know I will have to look for a bad ground or pinched wiring...love the diesel truck! 1994 Dodge 2500 with only 230,000 miles!!! any suggestions are welcome!

Losing both would make me suspect the switch. I would also trace the wires and check the bulbs and sockets just to check that off.

A corroded trailer connector could also cause trouble...

I had a similar issue. The plug nearest the lights had some paint on the prongs. a bit of scraping and contact cleaner helped. Not fun seeing the lights come on behind yah.

Headlight switch is a weak point on the 12 valves, many fail.
There is even a recall for them but it only applies to 3500 trucks.
The recall package from the dealer is a good way to go for a new switch and the upgrades so it won't fail again.

Many dealers have a side parts business over the net. Prices are cheaper than the dealer but the online prices are about the same from vendor to vendor.
I use this one> http://lowlowlowprices.sophio.com/oe....davesmith.com

Surprisingly Napa can get most parts, many of which used to be dealer only for even cheaper.
Best to check with them first.

Just called dave smith, they stock the CAJM8190 recall package that takes the trailer running light load off the headlight switch (thats what kills the switch) around $145 not bad
Yes, all 1994-1997 rams suffer from the weak headlight switch, made worse by running lights on trailers over loading the stock switch. The link Infidel posted is exactly what needs to be done to this year of trucks. Just ordered mine!
