2002 warranty question

What was the warranty on 02's and who's responsible for the VP44 and transfer pump, Dodge or Cummins? Truck has 60k miles on it.

Thanks,
Eric

Depends on when it was purchased originally. I bought mine late in the model year and the incentive then was a 7yr/100,000 mile engine warranty with a $100 deductible. My VP-44 went out at 100,300 miles and the dealer replaced it for $100. They said my lift pump was weak and wanted ~$700 to put an intank pump in. I politely told them no. I went and got a campaign pump and put it on and ordered a FASS at the same time. Ran the campaign pump for about 2 weeks until I could get the FASS installed.

This truck has the 7/70 but my local dealer is telling me Dodge will not cover a VP44 because it falls under the Cummins 5/100 warranty. I don't believe them so I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts are.

Yeah, I forgot to add, I believe the 7/100 was through Cummins. The dealership does the repairs and bills Cummins.

So it should be covered correct? Isn't the fuel system (at least the VP44) considered part of the powertrain?

Thx,
Eric

Cummins is under no obligation whatsoever. Dodge buys the engines from Cummins, that is the end of Cummins involvement. The VP44 is covered for a period of 5/100k and goes into effect AFTER the dodge basic 3/36. This is written in your warranty book. I had my VP replaced and paid the bill, then sent everything to Dodge customer service and received a check back from them minus the 1200 deductible.

I think Wurkenman meant $200 deductible and he is correct. It's Dodge you need to go after or Chrysler not Cummins. Read you warranty manual page 12 section 2.6 and prepare for a fight. Chrysler will cover the VP but they will tell you you're out of warranty.

Search for VP warranty here there are about 6 that I know of getting these fixed for $200 from the dealer, myself included.

If your stock go for the good fight, if your bombed your now your own warranty.

good luck.

Not sure that is exactly true. There was an issue with mine when my wife's son owned it. She realized one of the fella's her boss does business with worked for Cummins. She asked him about it when he came in and he said they would tow it (sounded like at Cummins expense) to the dealer of our choice, have it torn down and evaluated and if it was a warrant repair, fix it. It was gone when I came home and was repaired under warranty. I picked it up and asked about it. Service manager said Cummins warrants it for 100,000 miles so we just put a short block in it without any questions. Sounded like Cummins stood the warranty expense but I don't know that for sure.
