2002 Warranty Info.

Going to look at a 2002 2500 with 27k miles on it, the factory warranty remains. How long was the factory warranty good for on these trucks, I am pretty sure it was 100k, but was it 5, 7 or 10 years?

Thanks.

My 2002 has a 5yr/100,000 mile warranty on the engine through cummins and the 7yr/70000 mile powertrain warranty. I didn't know my truck had that 7/70 on it until a week ago when i had my trans worked on, beacause i bought it used. And i think the bumper to bumper warranty was 3yr/36,000 miles but i'm not too positive on that.

The 7/70 warranty didn't start until later in the 2002 model year. Mine was one of the first 2002s (I ordered it and it was delivered on 8/15/01), and it only had the 3/36 warranty (plus the 5/100 on the Cummins, of course).

Thanks for the info. I know the 2nd generations have had transmission issues, this truck is an automatic with 27k on it. It was used for a short time to pull a fifth wheel, then used to pull a large camper off the rear hitch, should I avoid this truck due to its pulling history or with that few of miles on it would it still be okay. I actually prefer the six speeds, but this truck is very nicely loaded and includes a few extras plus heated leather, but I dont want to have to deal with a lot of transmission issues along with the LP and injector pump issue.

Thanks.

Based on the experience of my RVing friends with automatics, if the truck was stock, the 47RE is probably OK. If it was even mildly bombed (an EZ is sometimes enough to do it), the TC lockup clutch can start slipping with enough heavy towing miles. If you're really interested in the truck, it might be worth having a trusted transmission guy check it out.

Thanks, going to check it out tonight. Truck is supposed to be completely stock, never bombed or edged or anything. If I get it, I would like to add at least an EZ Edge to it, is that hard on the Automatics? I know the Edge Comp box is bad on them, I may keep looking for a 5 or 6 speed truck, or break down and buy a new one.

Factory trannys vary greatly. I've seen some that don't even like an EZ. I know one other that lived long and prospered 3 yrs on an EZ, 275 injectors, a 4" lift and 38" tires!
How hard you drive it....and how often you drive it hard... probably makes as big a difference as any other factor.

I finally had a chance to drive the 2002 Quad Cab Cummins Automatic truck. The truck is fully loaded with heated leather and everything, and drove quite nicely. The truck does have an Edge box and it must be an easy Edge since it is only one level and cannot be adjusted. The truck drove nice didn't sway or anything going down the road, shifted nice but I did noticed that when held steady around 35 miles per hour the tranny would shift back and forth almost continuously between 2-3, even with the OD off, If I sped up I didn't notice it. When it was shifting like that it wasn't a hard shift or even a strong normal shift just kind of going back and forth between gears, is this an indication of future transmission problems. The truck has been used to tow a camper both with a 5th wheel that had been removed about a year ago and with the normal Reese hitch. Checked the codes and everything was fine. The VIN number is #3B7KF23642M233625 Should this truck still have the 100,000 mile warranty and with it? Any major concerns with the transmission or is that range I was noticing the shift in just a normal shift range I was hitting causing it to search back and forth.

Thanks for the opinions.

At 35 mph.... I don't think that's going between 2nd & 3rd. More likely going between 3rd gear and 3rd gear lock up (on the converter). No worries.... sounds normal. It should be just a 2-300 rpm change. Normal shift out of 2nd is around 25 mph+/- (been a while since driving a stock tranny).
Best test, IMO, is to drive it enough to warm it up and than run through the gears from a dead stop with at least 1/3 throttle. Floor it OD at 60+ to test for converter slippage.
Better yet, Get someone familiar with an Auto CTD to drive it! Where are you?

Thanks for the info, I live in KY. The tranny sounds like it is acting right then, I did hit it from a dead stop with at least 1/2-2/3 throttle and it shifted great. I work with a guy that is very familiar with these trucks, I may drag him over there for one more drive it I decide on this truck, going to look at an 02 Dually six speed first though.

WOW, thanks for the info, I may take you up on the fax when I get back to work next week and I am near a fax machine. I appreciate the effort you went through to get that information to me.

Regards,

Shannon

The warranty all depends when your 02 was put into service. The last of the 02s had a 7yr 100,000mi powertrain warranty which included the transmission. Write down you vin on a piece of paper and call Chrysler they will tell you how much warranty is left. I know this warranty to be true as I bought my 02 brand new.
