1997 4WD ABS/Brake light

ABS and Brake light on, brakes working fine
done so far
1) connections cleaned
2) wire s traced, no shorts
3) fuses OK
4) reset computer
5) replaced ABS sensor on differential housing

STILL ON
What else can I check, any electrical tests I can do
what kind of reading should I get out of rear sensor, continuity or open??

Anything else I can check, this isdriving me crazy

On my 98 the brake lights worked but same problem as yours. Turned out to be the stoplight switch.

Wow I am going through this right now also. I just got off the phone the the Dealer they want $41 for the sensor that goes in the diff.
I took my sesor out and cleaned it, that worked for about 20 miles.
The only diffenence i have is my steedometer is not working below 25 and it is jumping around. I am going to pick up an new sensor tomorrow and change it out.

Gook luck I will be watching this to see what comes about.

Mike

Have you checked for vacuum leaks? My '96 (and I think your '97) have vacuum assisted brakes and insufficient vacuum will turn on those lights. Shut your engine down, count to 10 and disconnect a vacuum line. You should hear the whooossshh of air filling up the vacuum. If not you have a leak. A couple of the connectors on that four-way union next to my master cylinder were too small and would intermittantly leak and turn on my lights.

Thanks,
no I did not check for vacuum , but will

my spedo works fine

I got word from the guy that helped me put in the rear sensor that he had to "pound out " the old one because it was stuck, which means he chiseld it out, I wonder now if he did not bung something up when he did that. He tells me that it just sits in the opening and no damage was done

Easier to just buy a new one, about $11 from most autoparts.
Be careful not to bend any pins installing it as it's difficult to see the pins.

Since you have hydro assisted brakes rather than vacuum a vacuum leak won't make your brake lights come on.

Trouble codes can be pulled from the RWAL system, but they changed it in 96 or 97. I don't think you can ground a wire and count flashes anymore, but I don't remember.
