'01 Cummins Rough Start

Just bought this 01. Love it to death, EZchip, Exhaust Brake, alot of fun. Recently about 10% of the time it takes about 5-7seconds of cranking before she fires up. Would this be a lift pump issue, I'm not sure but don't want to risk more damage by not fixing the problem. Truck only has 85,000mi on it so she's still a baby, just barely broke in.

Any suggesyions would be appreciated.

Thanks,
John

First of all, Welcome to the site!!! The next question is do you have gages? (pyro, fuel, boost, etc.) Did you try the key on-off trick to read the codes? You can also try most auto parts stores for scanning the codes too. Please fill out your sig so we know what your truck has. That would help us give you more ideas.

Also turn the key to the on position without starting, check to see if you hear the full pump run for about 5 seconds. If it runs continously then that is your problem. It has been wired in directly so that it always has power. These VP44's dont like to have pressure applied to them when they start.

If you bump the starter withour actually starting it should only run for about 20 seconds.

No codes came up it said PCU --------- P done, then ECU ---------- p done. I guess that's a good thing.

I'm gonna try to get a fuel pressure gauge in soon, need to raise a few extra bucks.

You guys think of anything else?

Thanks in advance,
John

put a new fuel filter in yesterday, someone told me, if the seal was bad the pressure might be bleeding off, so we'll see if that helps.

Thanks for all the responses so far.

Who makes a good fuel pressure gauge, that'll be the next test?

Thanks,
John

Does the lift pump have any codes associated with it, or is it only the injection pump?

Thanks,
John

I'm quite happy with my Dipricol Guages...

If you do hook up a fuel pressure DON'T order the isolator just plumb it in directly... Less errors that way!

Here is the brass I used... You also need a tapped banjo bolt that Geno's Garage will have.. The rest can be found at a Auto Parts store like NAPA...

The LP will not throw a code but it WILL cause the VP44 to throw a code P0216 (Death code!)
