Whole slew of fuel issues with my dads 01...
Ok, so a few weeks ago my dads truck started surging around 2k RPM's on the highway. I instructed him to check the fuel pressure and he ordered a fuel pressure kit from Geno's. He got it this week, we checked the pressure this morning it's reading a hair above zero until he starts it and then it sucks it right to zero as soon as its started. Sooo, we're investigating lift pump solutions. He's got the in take pump and we're not sure what the "best" way to resolve the issues. He's not worried about money but he only wants to do it once, do it right, and never worry about it again. It looks to me like the best option might be the Jeep libery canister, and the engine mounted FASS pump. The other option is the whole FASS/Airdog system, but it sounds like the draw straw is a major PITA especially since he has the 5th wheel hitch installed and pulling the bed will SUCK.
His truck even surges at idle right now, so we're afraid the injection pump may be gone as well, but we're going to start with the lift pump and go from there. No codes exist, either.
Any tips guys? Advice?
Thanks!
Shawn

3 key trick showed no codes. Just says PDONE. He's going to replace the fuel filter again, he's getting 8 PSI pre filter, 0 post. He just replaced it two weeks ago. He knows the pump needs to be replaced, but he's gonna replace the filter to see if it will at least idle smoother.
Here's an even better one for you guys...the truck had the in-tank recall done a number of years ago. It STILL has the engine mounted pump as well. What's the deal with that?!

If it was me, I wouldn't be fooling around with swapping filters or even trying to start it until you put a FASS or AD on. Why buy a stock filter or use a new one that you could sell when the lift pump systems come with new better filters? Why continue to starve the VP44 of fuel? You need to replace the lift pump anyways, do it right like you said.

Surging is gone with the higher pressure now by the way...

Okay,
lots of owners of the newer trucks want to keep the fuel filter housings. It makes sense. The filter changes are easy and you get to keep the water in fuel light and the heater. Now, how to fix this.
Pick your favorite lift pump fix. If it's a Raptor, FASS HPFP, FASS DDRP, or whatever. Once you figure that out, then you can decide what other parts you need.
If you want to do a Liberty module, then do it. However, you can easily put in a DrawStraw V into that module for a fraction of the cost. Or get a modded Liberty module from Vulcan already done.
If you choose one of the block mounted pumps, at least relocate it with the proper lines and harness.
And don't worry about that fifth wheel kit in the bed. Just drop the tank and it'll be just fine.
