Dads 96 2500 very low on power/fuel leak.
Dads 96 2500 very low on power/fuel leak.
My dad has a 1996 2500 2WD auto. Its stock except he has my old mildly upgraded automatic transmission in it.
He has had a slight fuel leak for a while coming from an area that I think is around the primer bulb. Truck seemed to be running fine otherwise and he's needed it for hauling his tools back and fourth to work on his boat, so we haven't had much time to look at it.
Last week he took his small travel trailer down with him and he told me yesterday that the truck felt super sluggish, took forever to get up to speed, and was just really low on power. He said he had so many cars stacked up behind him on on-ramps that it was embarassing.
I was out at his place yesterday so I took it for a drive and I think it just might be the slowest CTD on the planet. You can put your foot on the floor and it just very slowly picks up rpm and speed. Just totally gutless.
So two questions: This fuel leak seems to be coming from around the primer button area. He actually ran out of fuel today at only about 412 miles on the tank, which the truck never has before. The primer button was soaked with diesel fuel. (The shape of the primer button is just about imprinted on my thumb now from pressing it so much, LOL.). I'm thinking that the low fuel mileage / low power / fuel leak are all related.
Leak isn't coming from around the fuel filter, its somewhere lower.
Any suggestions on where to start troubleshooting?

You didnt say how many miles were on the truck, but if i had to guess, I would say the lift pump is shot on it.
They dont go out too often, but they do go out, and it sounds like his has lost some seals and isnt pumping fuel properly. The primer button is right on the lift pump, so if its coming out of there, im sure the lift pump just needs to be replaced.
Also, I would make sure the fuel filter doesent need replaced, and that the shutoff solenoid is pulling all the way up, but other than that, I would start by checking the fuel pressure, and replacing the lift pump because im betting that is the problem.

10¢ o-ring will probably fix the primer leak.

As for the power loss, highly doubt the leak is the problem.
Most important, check fuel pressure, instructions> http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94...-12-valve.html
You could also have a boost leak, a leaking AFC diaphragm or the leaking line from the AFC to the wastegate. These would all cause black smoke on acceleration.
