From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Cummins should be able to supply the little bugger.

I just picked one up at NAPA for $81. Part# CSS636 for my 2000. I don't know if that crosses to different years, but I'd imagine it would.

The CEL came on this afternoon and I pulled the code and it's CPS. I'm leaving tomorrow for 800mi round trip. Does it just go out and leave you stranded or what are the issues/symptoms? Thanks.

Ok, that's exactly what happened today on the hwy. I'm just trying to make sure I won't become stranded on the hwy. Any other results....

Mine did the same with the tach but when I shut it down, it would not start. I would replace it before going anywhere.

Not the answer I was looking for but I think I am going to have to gamble on this one. Is it a requirement that the IP be removed prior to installing due to the CPS location or does it just make the job easier? Thank you for the replies.

The Crankshaft position sensor is on the bottom side of the block, behind the starter. Pull the starter and it's right there. One retainer bolt holding it in. Should be able to swap it out along the road if you have to.

The Cam sensor is the one behind the Injection pump. I've heard it's possible to replace it without pulling the IP, just a pain in the neck.

$%&*@!.......ok now I'm confused. Going to have to go back and make sure I heard the guy correct who completed the scan. Cam or crank, cam or crank, cam or crank....I got it!
Again, thank you.

Most likely the crank sensor. The cam sensors are pretty useless on the 98-00 trucks.

Yep, verified and it's the crank sensor. I'll probaly clear the code and see if it returns...if so, then I'll replace. Thanks.
