What's wrong with my automatic transmission??

This started suddenly one afternoon, as I started out for home. The truck has no getup and go in first gear. If I put my foot on the brake, I can wind the tach up to 1500 with no sweat. Releasing the brake will casue an extremely slushy accelleration. Reverse is very peppy and shows none of the symptoms. A 40 mile drive on the interstate seems to cure the problem, but it returns when the transmission cools completely down. It has become repeatable so I guess it's time for a look see before the 100k drivetrain warranty expires. Any suggestions?

Mine has had that happen a few times. Have someone check the shift selonoids, sounds like you may be starting out in other than first gear. If that's it and they go in there. . .I replace all three while the pans pulled. If I don't, next week another will die sure as heck.

Cheers,
Steve J

Anyone ever had problems with the overrunning clutch? The diagnostic chart in the service manual points strongly to this component. This morning, I could barely get up my steep driveway. I may have to back up and out tomorrow. It seems to be a little better after the 40 mile ride to work, but still slips badly.

Are you sure it is starting in first gear? If the overrunning clutch is bad/slipping you aren't going anywhere.
Check the codes, it may be in limp mode.

Cycle the key-----on-off-on-off-on. the odometer window will show the codes, write them down.

That's the first thing I checked. I'm getting 1693 and 1762 (Gov Press Sens Offset Volts Too Low or Hi ). Once I get moving, there's no problem. I'm doing 40 miles on the interstate to work and she's running fine.

Gotta ask the obvious:

Is the AT fluid level good, and does the fluid smell and taste ok?

Yup, I checked it first thing, and it's fine (sorry, didn't taste it ). There is no first gear. When I downshift from D to 2, it bumps and deaccelerates, but from 2 to 1 it doesn't do a thing. So, apparently there's no first gear, and it must be starting out in 2'nd.

I'm taking it in tomorrow. Got home this evening and removed the BHAF and put the stock box back on. With 5K left on the warranty, I don't want any questions.

Just to wrap this one up. I got the truck back yesterday. It turned out to be a (?) bad governor pressure solenoid (?). (They talk to you like they just performed a heart transplant) But she's running good now, and they got me to buy a Liberty for the wife while we were there, so they had a pretty good day.

Well, I guess that's one way to get warranty work done without
a big hassle.
