u-joints?

Howdy,

Truck rattles and shakes when over 30 mph. The rear drive shaft u-joints seems to be tight. There is a little bit of play in the pinion. Noise is only when driving and the clutch is engaged. Push the clutch in and the noise stops.

Does the front drive shaft spin even with the truck in 2wd? I think the front drive shaft u-joint's have a bit to much play in them. Is it ok to remove the front drive shaft and still drive until I can get new u-joints?

Any other sugestions?

Thanks

I woudnt think that ,if the u joints were that loose, it would make the noise stop when disengaging clutch. You should still feel a vibration or something. It would definitely be more pronounced under a pull though. Maybe throw out bearing? Does the noise change when u just put a little pressure on the pedal?

Have you balanced the tires lately? I had a persistant vibration, put new tires on and found out it was a tire out of round.

Just a thought.

Yes, and Yes.
Not sure if it will leak fluid though.

The front driveshaft does not spin in 2WD - that is the reason the CAD is there in the first place - to stop the shaft from spinning when 4WD is disengaged at the t-case. Only 02's without the CAD should have the front shaft spinning in 2WD. There will be no harm in driving your truck with the front shaft removed.

I don't think it is the throw out bearing. Noise does not change if light presure is applied to the clutch.

I pulled the plug on the tranny. Does not appear to be metal in it.

Maybe the rear end?

I opened the rear diff. Big chunks of gear on the bottom. One of the carrier bearing is toast.

Ouch

The only money part really hurts the old wallet muscle though.

Really takes away from the bombing fund. Could have been a new turbo. Would have rather added something new than fixing broken part.

Wonder if the loose pinion is what took out the teeth?

Your horsepower isn't off the scale so I would bet thats what did it..

Shop around, those parts can be $$$$$$.

Good Luck

Truck is in the shop now. Normally do most of the work myself but a bit beyond my capabilites. They figure it was the carrier bearing that started it all.

I will have to post up pictures of the broken parts I get back
