what year model 5.9 can I put in my 1999 m/t
99-02 should be the same engine and would bolt right in. They are all VP-44 equipped truck.
Here is the differences listed here.

Might be worthwhile to check local legalaties, as in Illinois it's illegal to install an older engine into the truck than the model year of the truck. I mention this as some folks would find this a good opprotunity to put in a nice, relaible 12 valve instead of another 24-valve.
Good luck...sorry about your cracked 53 - does it still run?

There are problems with the crank sensor not being used on later models requiring a brain transplant - not sure where the break is.
I also did the 17" crack -- replaced with a 99 non-53 block.

Find a block, install it, and call it a day. 17" might be too big for lock-n-stitch. I think 01 was the year for the crank-sensor change and the issues with that can be resolved by getting an ECM of the same year.

If you have an Edge box or any others, then try to find a non 53 from 98.5 to 2000. They have the tone ring on the crankshaft for the crank position sensor and you won't have to change your ECM. The 2001 - 02 have the hole in the block to put a CKP sensor but the crank doesn't have the tone ring and isn't machined to bolt one to it, even though Dodge shows one in their parts schematic.
I just put an 01 in a 99 and eveything works OK, no code issues. Todd

01-02 is not the same as 98-00.
As Terminator pointed out, 01-02 doesn't use a crank sensor and the tone ring isn't there on the crank for one either.
But the 01-02 cam sensor is also in a slightly different spot than on the 98-00 timing cases. I see teminator had success with a swap, but my buddy's shop didn't have success when they tried a swap. So the crank with tone ring, the timing case, and all sensors all had to be swapped onto the 02 block to make it work right.
I've looked for non-53 98-00 blocks for other people, they're very difficult to find.
