What are symptoms of a bad thrust washer?

Have a bit of engine oil between the back of the engine and my NV-5600. I assumed it to be the rear main seal.
One place I talked to said it could be the thrust washer, which would mean the tranny needs to be torn down to replace. Being ignorant about trannys, I said OK and hung up. Then, going against my better judgement, I thought about it for a while. My one thought for the day leads me to ask this question: If the thrust washer was bad, wouldn't I see gear oil from the tranny and not engine oil?

Thanks,
~Rob

I usually put dye in the oil and have customer drive it for few days then recheck for location of leak with a black lite.

I also have a rear main that is leaking. Just started about two weeks ago. I have the clutch, flywheel all the other stuff renewed with a South Bend kit.

They wanted to change the Rear Main. I did not want to, 185k on it and was not leaking. So now, its leaking. Figures.

Unless you've changed the tranny oil and put something else in there that is not red, like the Penzoil Sycromesh Oil is and the Dodge Factory tranny oil, I suspect it is the rear main.

Now I could have got the trick put on me if they did not refill my tranny with the right stuff. My tranny was torn down because the South Bend clutch kit was making all kinds of noise and everyone thought it was the imput shaft bearing. Put all new stuff back in, still not happy with the way if shifts when its cold. Four time worst than it use to be.

South Bend replaced the kit and the noise went away. If I had it all to do again, I would stick with the stock size clutch. I love the way this one picks up the load, but its noisy when driving. Almost sounds like its out of balance.

If my rear main is leaking when I get back to Florida from Virginia with the fiver, I might send the clutch assembly out and see if it's out of balance. Then I'll have something to talk about.

The fluid I see is not red (I am running Redline MTL), so know it is engine oil.

Suspect is refering to thrust bearing in engine. Part of main bearings that controls end play of crankshaft. Doubt is problem. End play is probablly less than .010 inch. You got rear main seal leaking. Tech was giving good advice on replace while had tranny out.

If that's the case, whoever gave him the info is a fool. I think you'd notice a little more than an oil drip the crank decides to go for a walk
