My 99 24v diesel has had a check engine light come on for the last week. It runs a drives fine, but the light comes on every few start ups and will stay on till the truck is turned off. I turn the key on and off a few times and the check engine light goes away, then it will come on all of a sudden while Im driving. And periodically it will buck and surge when in gear while stopped at a traffic light.

The Tach and Speedo jump all over periodically while driving aswell.

Then a few days ago it would turn over but would not start. I got under the hood and beat on the connection where the Van Aaken Smart box was plugged into the VP44. It started fine after that.

I have replaced the transmission at 263,000km.

Any ideas whats wrong with it? This is my first diesel.

Also...the pump lookin thing on the inside fender well makes a thumpin sound when I turn the key on. It only started doing it after the truck wouldnt start a few days ago.

Could be the crank positiion sensor. That are some of the symtoms when it starts to fail. If your talking about the item mounted under the battery, that would be the cruise control.
