Well...it has finally come...I think

Well,
It is hot...which means I am cranking for 5 seconds now before it fires. Yesterday I pushed the throttle and it didn't go...

Companion code 1693 on the display. I'm off to borrow a scanner, but we all know the drill.

Hey...130,XXX miles and one VP. No complaints here. I think it is time for an upgrade!!!

I'm curios to know what additional codes you see besides the 1693. I believe I may be starting to lose my IP as well but only have a 1693. Starts and runs fine with decent milage and lots of power but just shuts off. Yeehaw!

Unfortunately I can't read the codes because the reader could only read if the "check engine light is on." So I don't know what other codes are in there. How do I find that out? I found last night to be frustrating, and I am not going to throw money at the problem until I have fully diagnosed it.

That being said...periodically my truck falls flat on its face and I am fairly certain it is the VP...I have to travel this week so I will continue tinkering next week.

A good scanner should be able to identify and clear codes. Mine was certainly useful diagnosing a failing MAP sensor so i tink you just need to find a better scanner. I own mine but I understand many auto parts shops wil let you use theirs.

I'm kind of in the same boat. My truck flat out died last weekend and I was sure that was it for the IP. Much to my surprise it restarted and apparently only threw a 1693 (not much help).

REALLY, don't want to spend 1600 'till I know for sure. Guess I'll double check my triple A details.....

Keep us posted?

BTW...did you try the key trick - on, off, on, off, on, read the codes in the odometer window. Doesn't always show all codes but its a quick place to start.

Yeah, I did the trick and only got the 1693 code. The scanner my friend had read nothing, and the one at the parts store read nothing also...even when I see the code on the odometer. So I will have to try something else.

I suppose it could be a MAP sensor too...same symptoms. I could try that and it would not be expensive. It is the original.

But given that the symptoms are that it only happens when it is hot outside, the engine is hot also, and I am restarting before everything cools down...I think it is VP related. The crank time has extended to about 10 seconds when everything is hot and it fires up right away in the morning. I know pressure at the VP is good...no air leaks.

There are just times where it is gutless and runs flat...for lack of a better expression. The throttle changes the tone of the engine, but I build no boost and it doesn't feel like it is fueling. So in a way it does feel like a bad MAP sensor, but the temp issue has me concerned. Boy...I hope it is the MAP sensor!

Thanks Purplezr2. I figure this is the case. I will nurse it along as long as I can. I will research new VPs now.
