The time has finally come!

Next month starts my drive train rebuild. Motor, Tranny, Axles, everything. I have been doing alot of research all winter but still have some things that have me bewildered. Its mainly tranny questions. 93 W250 with the OD auto. I have a truck with a stick and love it, but its really nice sometimes to jump in this truck, put it in gear and go. Having said that, I still want to have some serious power and not grenade the tranny. I want to make this tranny bulletproof. Is it possible? If so, what will it take. All suggestions welcome. Parts, Kits, Brand names, sources... Thank you in advance. This is the only thing holding me back.

Sorry, that was confusing. I want to keep the A518 in it.

How fast do you want to go? ($$$)

A lot of the 727 parts will work in the A518 (AKA: 46RH). That being said, there's a BIG truck load of aftermarket high performance parts available. Further, there's a lot of the 47 and 48 transmission parts that can be used in the A518.

Here's a thread for example where I yak about bombing my heap ~ https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...s-t273018.html

All things considered, I was conservative in a number of areas.

David,
Wow, thats a great write up. How many hp are you making now? I dont think I would ever see more than 400-425hp. What was the estimated cost? Would you suggest a lock up for me? I cant decide. I wont be doin much racing, I just want one heck of a toy to play around in.

- I'm not really sure what power is going to the ground. The last time I had the mess on a dyno, the AFC's boost reference tube was later found to be disconnected. With that, it still put down 435/1006 on #2 if I recall correctly.
- Expensive.
- The lock-up converter question is IMO, really a matter of personal preference based on what you do with the truck. For the regular old grocery-getter, I question the cost effectiveness. For the highway truck that runs a LOT of miles annually, it's a good investment in increased fuel mileage.
In the drag-race setting, it's good for a full quarter second from what I can tell. But it comes with the added expense of broken stock input shafts, replaced with really expensive billet shafts. Again, how fast do you want to go?

I would keep doing research as I am quite the lucky amateur.

Where did you source all of your parts for your rebuild? This sounds like it would be plenty strong for the hp i am looking to have.
