VP44 question

I am not very farmiliar with the VP44 pump. What I was wondering was does the pump regulate psi. I know it has a return line to get rid of excess fuel but if a guy was to replace the stock lift pump with an aftermarket one would you have to run a pressure regulator to control psi if you got a pump that would deliver more than needed. Thanks for any advice/help.
Re:VP44 question

There is a metering orfice in the pump but you really don't want to go over about 24 psi

Re:VP44 question

Anything over 20 psi will cause a hard to start condition.

Re:VP44 question

If I'm correct, the lift pump AND the VP44 both regulate pressure. What causes the lift pump to go out is not really the distance from the tank (though that contributes) is the excessive amount of back pressure on it. The regulator in the lift pump goes out. I know this isn't about the VP44, but just thought I would add that in.

Re:VP44 question

Thanks guys for all you help. Heres what I have have in mind.
I have a Chevy 1 ton 4x4 with a supercharged 468 big block with dual dominator carbs. I used a Aeromotive A1000 pump to supply fuel. I have since torn down the motor to put in a stroker kit and upgrade drive line issues. Im thinkin since i have it all apart to yank the pump and regulator (adjustable 3-20 psi) and mount it on my truck bypassing and removing the stock lift pump. The pump has 10AN fittings and I have some braided line left. Just have to take a look at the filter assembly and see how to hook a line to it. Anyone have any ideas? I had considered a Black pump and a change over but I already have the pump and regulator.

Re:VP44 question

Blue, it made a massive amount of power, the engine builders determined around 1000 hp, just the motor not to the ground. They had built a motor just like mine except a different make block for a tractor puller that pulled a mini mod in a cheater class, theyre ususally limited to 410CI. Anyway I cant find a dyno locally so I only have aproximate figures. People who rode with me dont have trouble believeing after a rolling burnout Ive been practicing(still not perfected). I have a line lock and an adjustable proportioning valve so I can attempt Dean Skuza style burnouts. After one or two you gotta stop and get more fuel. Back to diesel. Im hoping after Christmas I can get that pump on my Dodge and see if I can make something good happen. The pump is rated at 45psi and 500 lb/hr so you can use it for EFI engines. Up to 1300 hp on a carb engine. So I think it shouldn't have a bit of trouble, and you can run diesel through it. Its been good to me so far. I had an outside fuel psi guage on my gasser and it always kept up with it. I had a boost refrenced regulator that increases psi 1:1 per pound of boost if its hooked up. Its not making the kind of boost diesels make though. I also had a fuel log to prevent starvation during WOT. If everything works out Ill just get another pump for my gasser later since its far from a daily driver. Ill keep everybody posted. I just wasnt sure how much pressure the VP44 could take without causing a disaster and costing lots of money.
