VP 44 injection pump
VP 44 injection pump
Well it looks like the legacy of the dreaded VP 44 has decided to affect my truck
I bought the truck in June, on a trip in August it started having a slight miss.
I changed the injectors and it ran better for a few days.
I had a guy check it out with a scan tool, no codes. He checked the lift pump pressure, said at 20 psi it was good (said it has a good aftermarket pump on it).
I ran Stanadyne and Power Service through it at different times and it would tun better for a few days then start having a random miss again.
Eventually it started missing all the time, engine light comes randomly.
Codes show #0122 and #1693.
I got sick of the miss, dropped it off, they checked it out and suspected the injection pump as they couldn't find any other problems.
They installed a new pump and they said now the truck runs great again.
We had talked about adding an Edge Juice controller that he has, but since it's Christmas time, it's not in the budget.
He feels a programmer has been downloaded in the truck already from what he see's on his scan tool.
Is there any way to tell if one has been downloaded?

1693 is the companion code, means an error happened in the Cummins ECM that the Dodge PCM picked up on.
0122 is Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Low Input. Seems this would give you dead pedal symptoms, not a miss. Strange.
I don't know how to tell if a downloader was used. I'm sure someone else will chime in with that information.

Well, I picked up the truck and it definitely idles smooth now (again).
The guy that worked on it said the injection pump look like it has been replaced before (looks like a rebuilt unit).
But since I don't know the history of the truck, who knows.
He said with the electronics on the pump can go at any time.
Sucks, but ohh well, what can you do.
