2000 stock Dodge. The VP44 was just replaced and I put about 500 miles on it since. I had to get in the throttle hard once and after that I have had a unusual whirling sound that mimicks the turbo. I do believe that it is somehow turbo related. This is not a whining like the turbo usually does but an actual whirling sound. It is audiable (quite loud) when the turbo spins up and the truck is looking for more power (going up an incline or hard on throttle to accelerate up to speed quickly). I pulled the inlet air tube to check the compressor to see if there was any play-very minimal (does not touch the housing sides). I checked all the intake air hoses for leaks - none found. Not sure what the boost pressure is running at. I also read a thread about wastegate issues....any thoughts on that? Anyone have any other idea where to look or might know what is making this noise?

 

It could just be the fan clutch and you've never noticed it before.

 

Brand new noise - never heard it before over the 100k + miles i have put on it.

 

Could be exhaust manifold as well. I've been noticing quite a whirling, almost like a strong wind sound coming from the passenger area of the truck. And I know my old exhaust manifold was cracked in multiple places as well as the #6 cylinder gasket. I could sit at an intersection at night and see the faint exhaust coming from under the hood. If I revved it up in park with the hood up during the day I could see black puff up. I would get a mirror and check your entire manifold, IMO just to be safe.

 

could you have blown a boost boot off? partially off ? slplit ???? wehre in this great state are ya, maybe a few of us locals might be able to help figure it out ?

Boost boot? I am not too familiar with that part. Where might I find it? Are you referring to the boots into and out of the intercooler? I am up in NW NJ - Blairstown area.

 

Those are the ones. There are 4 of them. Lower drivers side boot is the most common culprit.

The noise sounds like a boost pressure leak by the way that you describe it. A loss of boost pressure reduces your engines efficiency/power and raises your EGT's, depending on how severe the leak is.

 

I did inspect all 4 of those boots for holes or tears - nothing found. They were also very secure - not loose in any way. I will double check thoroughly.

 

It does appear to be apparent when the turbo is really pushing air (more power needed)...so that boost pressure leak makes sense. Now I gotta find it.

 

I had the same thing after changing the pump. for me it was a loose clamp on the intercooler, that i tought was tight.

 

I read somewhere here in the forums that the boots do expand a little when they are under pressure. If you can pressure test your system without the truck running (with an air compressor), that would tell for certain if you had a leak.
