Turned out to be defective VP44.
I have posted three times over the past few months trying to troubleshoot a starting problem. Here are my posts. https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=90244 https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=86223 https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...ad.php?t=88335 It turns out the problem all along was a defective VP44. I got a rebuilt one from a local diesel shop for $1550 Cdn and the truck is running well and starting up normally. What is surprising is that no codes were generated and no one else on this site seems to have had the VP44 go out the same way. I did a lot of searches on this site to see if anyone else have had similar symptons and nothing came up. Anyway all is well that ends well. The VP44 in a Freightliner is not the same one as in a Ram, I don't know if that accounts for my unusual symptons.
Thanks for the update.
Folks that come back and post the final outcome of their problem, help the next guy who might be experiencing a similar trouble.
When my VP croaked, it just shut down without warning.
Never had a hard start, dead pedal, or hiccup, or low power problem like some others had posted.
Mine also didn't throw a severe code to turn on the MIL.
One HRVP and about 4 1/2 hours under the hood later, and all's well in Cummins Diesel land.
