transmission troubles
well i got some free time today and started lookin at the truck and noticed that the transmission wouldnt turn. so i took the top plate off and wow. found ground off gears, metal peices everywhere, and a destroyed bearing. looks like that gears locked up and the clutch was actually jus the weak link and tore apart.
had some questions. the gear that chewed off or whatever, is that the gear on the input shaft? and how hard is it to put back in.
also, what parts does it look like im gonna need to replace it. and for all u guys that own businesses, go ahead and price me some parts on it. and if it needs a new input shaft, go ahead and price a 1 3/8 one.
thanks guys, i need all the input and help i can get.

Well,
The input shaft is shot for sure. The gear below it is most likely a machined part of the countershaft, so you would need a new C/S as well. I would guess a new input bearing, pocket bearing, thrust bearing at a minimum. I would take it all apart and check all of your syncros, gears and small parts as well. They aren't hard to rebuild, but you need a few special tools, or the ability to make some and a dial indicator with mag base. You should be able to get a bearing and seal kit, but hard parts will be by the piece. Looks like it ran out of oil.

thanks for the reply. i had someone else tell me that it lookd like it got low on oil. now my problem is that the shaft wont come off the mainshaft or whatever its connected to. im about go nuts on this thing. i pulled the front bearing retainer thing off and cant get the shaft to pull thru. any tips or has this happend to anyone else? at least it makes me ugrade to the larger shaft!
The input shaft goes into the 3-4 sychro hub and may have welded itself to that or the countershaft, but it should just slide out the front. Might need to work on it with a hammer to get it out of there, but if that is the case, you probably have more damage that you think.
Let us know. Post more pics if needed. I have had the unfortunate pleasure of rebuilding 3-4 of these out of our fleet trucks so I might be able to assess some of your damage from pics.

well i finally got the input shaft off with help of my 3lbs sledge. took a little while and a few screwdrivers but its off
. i might throw it up on a trailer and take to a transmission shop around here and see what they think. i dont wanna put it together and have to take it back out in a month. ill get some more pics up when i get home.

Yeah, if you needed a hammer to get it out something else is damaged. If it ran out of oil everything probably got hot and brittle, but the same thing happened to one of mine and we just replaced the input and countershaft and bearings and it is still going good.

i think that roller bearing inside the shaft broke apart and just jambed it up. hopefully. gonna check it out more when i get home. is putting the countershaft in and all something i can do or should i take it to a shop? it dont have a dial indicator or anything so...? and contractor, could u pm me a price on bout what it took to rebuild it. thanks
To get the countershaft out you need to remove the mainshaft & cluster first. From your pics, the extension housing is still attached which would also need to come off to allow access to 5th gear and rear bearing retainer. Really if you want to go through it, it isn't hard and you can get a manual off of quad 4 x 4 to illustrate, but if you don't have the tools like a bearing splitter and puller, dial indicator etc. it can get kind of spendy. Parts for the one I did were around $ 400 for input c/s and bearing & seal kit. Plus a day to rebuild it.
well thats not too bad. i might ask around at a couple shops jus to see what they would charge. thanks for the help tho. it is greatly appreciated. ill let u know what i come up with or any more questions! thanks again
Quad 4x4 used to carry parts, they were original NVG parts but they have sold out of alot of them, so last time I ordered from Stadard Transmission in Vegas. I'm sure the gears and such come from China, but I needed to get up and running. Google NV4500 rebuild kit, and they should come up. If you need the manual let me know and I can try to email it. Hopefully it isn't too large a file
can u all tell if this is the upgraded 5th gear nut. ive been lookin around for a pic of one but no luck. its got a torx bolt in it that like tightens it together like a clamp i guess?
