transmission troubles

well i got some free time today and started lookin at the truck and noticed that the transmission wouldnt turn. so i took the top plate off and wow. found ground off gears, metal peices everywhere, and a destroyed bearing. looks like that gears locked up and the clutch was actually jus the weak link and tore apart.
had some questions. the gear that chewed off or whatever, is that the gear on the input shaft? and how hard is it to put back in.
also, what parts does it look like im gonna need to replace it. and for all u guys that own businesses, go ahead and price me some parts on it. and if it needs a new input shaft, go ahead and price a 1 3/8 one.
thanks guys, i need all the input and help i can get.

Well,

The input shaft is shot for sure. The gear below it is most likely a machined part of the countershaft, so you would need a new C/S as well. I would guess a new input bearing, pocket bearing, thrust bearing at a minimum. I would take it all apart and check all of your syncros, gears and small parts as well. They aren't hard to rebuild, but you need a few special tools, or the ability to make some and a dial indicator with mag base. You should be able to get a bearing and seal kit, but hard parts will be by the piece. Looks like it ran out of oil.

The input shaft goes into the 3-4 sychro hub and may have welded itself to that or the countershaft, but it should just slide out the front. Might need to work on it with a hammer to get it out of there, but if that is the case, you probably have more damage that you think.

Let us know. Post more pics if needed. I have had the unfortunate pleasure of rebuilding 3-4 of these out of our fleet trucks so I might be able to assess some of your damage from pics.

Yeah, if you needed a hammer to get it out something else is damaged. If it ran out of oil everything probably got hot and brittle, but the same thing happened to one of mine and we just replaced the input and countershaft and bearings and it is still going good.

To get the countershaft out you need to remove the mainshaft & cluster first. From your pics, the extension housing is still attached which would also need to come off to allow access to 5th gear and rear bearing retainer. Really if you want to go through it, it isn't hard and you can get a manual off of quad 4 x 4 to illustrate, but if you don't have the tools like a bearing splitter and puller, dial indicator etc. it can get kind of spendy. Parts for the one I did were around $ 400 for input c/s and bearing & seal kit. Plus a day to rebuild it.

Not really and if you have the time it is pretty interesting to learn how these work. Plus you can do the 5th gear fix while you're in there.

Quad 4x4 used to carry parts, they were original NVG parts but they have sold out of alot of them, so last time I ordered from Stadard Transmission in Vegas. I'm sure the gears and such come from China, but I needed to get up and running. Google NV4500 rebuild kit, and they should come up. If you need the manual let me know and I can try to email it. Hopefully it isn't too large a file

That is an upgraded nut, that won't hold either. I finally tack welded the nut in 3 places. Next time i'll be forced to get the upgraded main.
