Transmission Questions
Transmission Questions
Hello. I'm a new guy here on the forum. I've been a lurker for quite a while now and I decided to go ahead and jump on in. We finally got into Dodge diesels a few years ago when we decided that our old gas rigs just weren't cutting the mustard for our towing needs. My apologies but I think I will have many questions from time to time.
My first big question is about the manual transmissions used in the Dodge trucks. I know the NV4500 was used until about '03. I've also heard of a Getrag 5 speed. I also know of the NV5600 six speed. When was this used? I was told that it was used in 01-02 but that my '02 had a different tranny(don't know what). Its a cast iron case and looks bullet proof like the NV5600. What other options were there? I've also heard that Allison made the transmissions for the high output trucks in 01-02. Now all the third gens. use a Mercedes aluminum case tranny right? Just curious as to whether all this stuff I've heard is true or what. Thanks.

Hope this helps....I think the NV4500 5-speed was available from 1994-2001. The NV5600 6-speed started to show up on some 1999-2000 trucks. In 2001, the only tranny for the H.O. cummins was the NV5600. Standard output engines got the NV4500 or the 47RE auto. In late 2004 the G-56 6-speed became available. (This is the aluminum cased, dual-mass flywheel tranny that some love and some hate.) Yes it is built by a Mercedes subsiduary. Allison trannys are NOT in the 2001-2002 trucks. But so many people wish they were.
