Transmission - late 1- 2 upshift

I have a 2000 Ram 2500 (92000 miles) with an automatic trans. I often tow a 20ft enclosed trailer around town here in Florida. Recently I found that the truck does not want to shift to 2nd gear under acceleration. Only by letting off of the accelerator will it shift into 2nd. It also shifts back to 1st below 30mph at only mild acceleration. Other shifting and tranny operation appears normal. Has anyone else experienced this problem and if so what was done to correct it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re:Transmission - late 1- 2 upshift

reaton - my 99' also requires me to back off the accelerator to upshift to 2nd gear, whether I'm towing or not. Took it to the dealer once and they did a quick adjustment (about 5 minutes under the hood, throttle sensitivity I think) which helped for a while. Now about 6 mos later it's doing it again. Pain in the _ss, especially when someone else drives it. PA State inspection requires a road test and despite warning the mech. about this, you can hear him roaring up the road trying to get into 2nd. Now I guess I'm just getting used to it and I don't let anyone drive it without me in the truck. They just love that!!<br><br>Hope you find the cure, I'll be following your thread. Good Luck.

There is some discussion of the problem at the DTT forum:<br><br>http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=74<br><br>http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=106<br><br>http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=89<br><br>http://www.dieseltrans.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=123

Sorry to tell you this. Had the same problem with my 2001. Took it to the dealer and found the 2nd gear band worn to the point of not being adjustable. Bottom line- $3000.00 tranny rebuild. Got the dealer to pay for $2000.00 otherwise I would have put in a DTT trans.

Thanks to you guys who replied. Yep, the tranny had to be overhauled $2900. Ouch! But I just got the truck back and the tranny shifts better than it ever did.
