Transmission Fluid Temperature

Anybody tried using the extra capacity transmission pans on their trucks? Like the Mag Hytec DD that holds an extra 4 quarts of fluid on a 47RE....I was wondering how much they help to keep the temperature of the fluid down at a reasonable level. If it keeps the temperature down then i figure it would be worth the $300 to help extend the life of these transmissions.....

i went with a PML 2qt over pan after the rebuild. my builder suggested a 2qt over pan because a 4qt will take alot longer to warm up. the pan will also add strenght to the case

I could be wrong but I dont think the larger pan will help extend the life, its the hard parts that fail, like TC and clutches, because of the engine torque and not enough pressure to keep things applied.

I could be wrong, but call a top notch tranny shop I'm sure they would be able to clear it up for you

thanks. isn't the optimal temperature for transmission fluid to be around 140F or so? i know i've heard that it likes to be around a certain temperature to run smooth. i live in the south & it gets pretty hot in the summer. i know it wouldn't have trouble warming up in the summer, but i guess it might during winter.....temperature usually only gets down around 25-30.....I guess the PML pan might be a better option since I don't tow a whole lot.....

i had just always thought that lower temperature for transmission was better.....i thought it would start to shorten the life of the transmission after the fluid got up in the 175 degree range and above.....i know when it's hot & i'm hauling something it can get a little warmer than i would like to see.....

here is a chart that lists tranny temp vs tranny failure.

at 175, it will last 100,000miles. it basically saying that the oil degrades over time, the hotter it gets. so if you happen to run it hot once or twice, just change the oil,

trans oil is fed thru the cooler (on the block) so id suspect temps in the 190f would be normal same as coolant temp.

I just put a Mag Hytec double deep pan I had laying around on mine. If anybody's research and development department wants to help fund gauges I'd be glad to provide them with some readings!

where's a good place it install the sensor probe?
does the cooler have something like a thermostat in the line?

I read a little on PML's website & they did say this:

"ATF manufacturers suggest that for every 20° above 175°F, the life of the transmission is reduced by half."

I've never seen it get in the 190 range but I'm sure that some guys do that tow & haul heavy loads a lot....I would think that an extra capacity pan would be absolutely necessary if you tow alot & wanted your transmission to last.....

on the pml pans i think you have to drill your own port if you want to put a sensor in....i think the mag hytec pans already have a port drilled for a temp sensor....they also make an adapter than you can just attach to the cooler lines to get the fluid temperature if you would rather not put a sensor in the pan....I've got an EDGE Insight on mine & it just gets the fluid temperature from the ECM....

I have my trans temp sensor in the
HOT line going to the trans cooler. this should read the hottest. PML pan uses stock gaskets and are alot cheaper, I have a plain cast one, nobody is goona see it anyway.
