unless I let off throttle. I think the front band is broke. I tried adjusting the band and the adjusting screw tightens almost flush with case before any resistance. How hard is it to fix? Truck just turned 70,000 miles.

My does the same thing after altenator died. Volts went down to 8,Installed new altenator, now shifting funny. I did the remove battery cables and reconnect than pushed pedal down to floor and up slowly, got a little better but still won't shift into 2nd without releasing throttle a little.

as a matter of fact I did change the speed sensor. and checked the tv cable. then I checked the front band adjustment, it was way to loose which leads me to believe thats the problem. Goerends web site has a video on how to do it. I was thinking of putting in the kevlar band, and possibly a cheap torque converter, I have a transgo valve body shift kit I never got chance to install till now. So it looks like the trans is coming out.

Most likely your band was wayyyyyy out of adjustment and the strut link fell off. Drop the pan and take a look. If that's what it is you simply have to drop the valve body, re-assemble and adjust. I get a few of these every year.

I dropped the valve body. all the parts are in place. there's a paper thin piece of brake lining type material up in band area that came out. looks like metal to metal, band to the drum. How thick should the band be? Does the trans and transfer case come out together or should you drop the transfer case first? any tips appreciated
Thanks for your input.

Band material is pretty thin....but it also a brown in color even on good condtion high milers. If your drum is scarred and the piece of material black....yes, it's R/R time. Dropping the unit is personal choice. I'm spoiled and have use of a hoist and a trans jack from the devil himself. I drop it as a unit and split it once it's down. Pay close attention to the servo seal and bore in the case.

well I got the trans out today. took the front band out and there was no band. the drum is scored, I don't know if thats a huge problem or not. now I'm at the crossroad of what to do. Just replace the band and patch it back together. there's only 70,000 miles on this trans. buy a rebuild kit put as much of it in that I can and call it a day. take it to the local trans rebuilder and let them mess it up with cheap parts. or spend a small fortune that I don't have and get it done right.
