Automatic Tranny Doesn't Start in 1st gear

Hey guys, the tranny started acting up. When I drop it in "D", it doesn't start in 1st gear. I think it's starting in 2nd gear. It WILL, however, start in 1st gear if I put the shifter in the "1" position from neutral or park. But if I put it in "D" first, then put it in "1" right after, it will NOT go into 1st every single time. Any ideas?

Do the simple stuff first(sometimes we automatically<pun intended - I hear Wannadiesel laughing...> make it complicated). Check to see if your column linkage hasn't slipped or might need adjustment. Just a very small change in the length can make a BIG difference how those spool valves operate in the transmission! Hope it may be that simple, check 'em out and let us know, ok? Good luck!!

Cool thanks. I'll check that out. BTW, is there another name for a "micro-hockey stick?" It's a little tool used to add the parking rod clip to the valvebody.

I think that's what' they told me when I had the same problem. It was a $200 dollar fix when coupled with a all synthetic service on my 98.

I just remember it was the selonoid that tells the tranny to shift down.

Thanks for the help guys. That sounds like it could've been it because the electrical connector to the valve body is kinda loose (I broke and fixed a pin in it). But anyway, the truck seems to have fixed itself. It's been working fine.
