how many miles do you have on your truck? While changing my oil filter I hit my channel locks on my alternator connection. Shortly after that my truck started the surging and hunting like you are having problems with. I had my alternator rebuilt, they changed my rectifier at the same time as changing the brushes and it fixed my problem. The alternator guy said he thought I burned out a diaode in the rectifier with the channel lock incident. To make a long story short 60 bucks and a rebuilt alternator later my problem was solved.

Good Luck

i think my alternator is fine i just put 2 new batteries in 3 months ago and haven't had any problems with the charging system. I will have it checked out at advance auto tomorrow morning but what does it have to do with the tranny problems

Electronically controlled tranmission don't like electrical noise of any kind, be it correded battery contacts, loose grounds, noisy alternators, etc.

My alternator was still charging the batteries, I guess the short and blown diaode just affected the noise level but not the charging ability. Like the post above stated clean all the battery posts, check the two connections between the passenger side battery and the alternator. These will be grey snap connectors, sometimes they will get dirty inside. I cut mine out and soldered them solid then used heat shrink tubing to seal the splice.

Good luck

Might try a search for transmission hunting. A few days ago there was a thread. Might be as simple as suggested above or a noise filter from radio shack on the wire coming from your alt.

Phox is right, these transmissions need voltage and the slightest volt drop will affect your transmission. I have to clean all my connections about every two years so that my transmission shifts smoothly.....I camp in Baja and drive across miles of salt flats and moist salt air....Clean (sand) all connections, this includes all grounds to the body, engine block,alternator;"10mm socket"to remove it, and clean both batteries. It is a good idea to apply an electrical spray or grease on all cleaned connections.

Transmission hunt

I had the same problem. I shielded the alternator wire and the problem went away - for a couple days. It got to the point that I was routinely diconnecting the batteries every few days. Another lister mentioned that there is a connector on the alternator ground wire located under the passenger side battery box. This connector often corrodes. I removed the connector and spliced the wires together and I haven't had the problem in 8 months.

This forum has been a great help. Disconnecting the battery stopped mine from hunting for a month or so the first time. It progressively became more frequent, like weekly. I have now removed and completely cleaned both batteries. Removed all corrosion from all connectors, including the alternator ground. Six weeks and all is still running great.
