Tranny going in and out of overdrive sometimes

The tranny doesn't do this all the times just every know and then for the past week almost. I have noticed that when I push the "gas" pedal to a steady pace it shifts fine into overdrive, but if it is too slow or too fast it slips into and out of and back into overdrive. I cannot figure out what may have gone wrong all the sudden. I changed 5 qts of fluid and the filter yesterday and it seems to be happening more often today then any other day. Does anyone have a suggestion or if the tranny has some kind of pressure regulator or sensor that typically goes bad. I know that someone is gonna say it needs rebuilt, it has 175k miles, but If it is just a sensor or something small I would rather just change that of course. Other than overdrive it shifts fine into 1st,2nd, and 3rd with no hesitation. Thanks for any help guys and God Bless. Aaron

do a search on throttle position sensor,do the tests on it,make sure the resistance is right and adjust if necessary,it controls the overdrive and lockup

I took the truck to Charlies Certified Transmission this morning and they scaned it with the computer and the computer came back with no codes. So he decides to test drive and the truck does fine with no problems. Well this morning the transmission is shifting into 1st and 2nd pretty close to each other. JD from Charlies said that the only thing he could narrow it down to would be a lip seal, where it has a hair line crack in it and releasing too much pressure and engaging to quickly. I said, "Ok but you have driven it for 30 mintues and shifted through every gear several times and it has not acted funny once. So I guess I am under the assumption that a seal is cracked and letting pressure by and the 1st and 2nd shift are effected now!! I will ride it out and see how things go and report back to everyone. Thanks for all the help and any suggestions anyone has. Aaron

my wifes truck did that and the tranny shop put a filter that came from DTT i believe and it stopped the problem. It had some thing to do with the apps sensor. The speed sensor also effects the tranny shifting hers does it when her fuel gauge is low hope this helps

Electrical noise.

Check all grounds and connections. Especially the biggest noise filter on this beast, the batteries.

Dirty cable connectors are a regular problem for the autos.

Best part of the fix, it's free.

Powerstroke this had the same problems and what it turned out to be was the TPS (throttle positions sensor) and the throttle cable it self...

I imagine if you were to drive it and monitored it with a scan tool you would find that the jtec controller is actually telling the trans to "lock" or "unlock" your trans. If this is so you'll need to investigate an RFI issue that the JTEC percieves as a signal from a sensor. If the scan tool says "locked" and it stays there even though the trans is shifting in and out, there is most likely a mechanical issue with the trans.
