I finally decided to remove and clean my IAT sensor yesterday and was a little surprised with what I found. It was as close to spotless as you can get. I shot it down with cleaner just for good measure but it really didn't need it. I've read posts where some people's were completely black with soot and some that clean thier's at every oil change due to soot build-up. Is an IAT sensor this clean a good thing? I would assume it is.

This truck has 73,000 miles by the way. I've owned it since 50,000 and I didn't see anything that would lead me to believe that sensor had been pulled and cleaned before.

 

If the truck is running OK, then it's probably not bad. Mine was clean when I took it out, but at 160k +, but I replaced it anyway.

 

i bought my truck with 200k+ miles and at 300K i looked at it for the first time and it was dang near spotless.........guess some trucks have more soot build up then others.. then again i run biodiesel

 

In the process of changing heads on mine I got to see mine. It was spottless after 100k.

 

If you run an exhaust brake like I do, it gets ugly.
I clean mine very oil change.

I agree if you got a Jake/Exhaust Brake it will be ugly looking within about 6K miles... Mine not so much as sooty it's more black oily looking than anything...

But I normal pull it out every oil change to clean mine since I use the Jake quite often. Matter of fact my service brakes are still new looking for 68K+ on the clock.

 

I 3rd the exhaust brake making the IAT dirty.....it dirties it up but good! You will be humming a different tune when you have an EB for sure!
Mopar, I have the same crap on the IAT as you....not so much soot but rather black and gooey like soot and oil mixed together. Varsol and some compressed air cleans it in about 30 seconds.

 

just because it is clean doesnt mean it is good. the sensor could be out of range.....meaning the time it take to register a certain ohm of resistence per degree of temperature change...u can test the resistence with an ohm meter and a heat gun. the quicker the response to temperture change the better.if u need/want a new one, standard ignition makes the oem sensor and u can get/order it form just about any auto parts store for $26.00 part #ax68
