Time to replace VP44?

I bought my truck as a project, it wasnt running & the LP wasnt working. I replaced the lift pump & now Ive got plenty of fuel pressure with no air in the system. Now the truck will start after cranking & cranking it (I know its close when I see smoke coming out of the exhaust) Once it starts It will run all day without a hiccup or miss! But after shutting it off(even for 2 secs) It will not start again, without going through the whole procedure again. I know the previous owner ran the truck for some time with a bad LP. But whats got me is that it runs so nice once running. Any suggestions, ideas are appreciated. Oh its my 99.

The check engine light is on, but my truck wont show codes by clicking the key on & off. I need a scanner, but does the engine need to be running?

After clearing all codes it only came up with P0216 code (injection pump timing failure) Is th VP44 going bad?
thanks
Doug

PO216 is the VP44 death code. Sounds like there's a new injection pump in your future.
