On my 01 there is a bushing underneath the cab on the side of trans(just follow the linkage cant hardly miss it). That had popped out, in fact on mine it has come out several times. Might be worth checking. I have been able to just pop it back in but I should probably replace it with a new one, hopefully a new one will keep it from coming out yet again in the future.

Is it loose where is goes in the gear like it's half way in another gear? But it is actually not? Or is it the shifter itself that is wobbly?

the shift lever itself is loose. If you are in (D), it has a lot of play in it?

I will be interested as to what the svr manager says. BarryG, I think those are called grommets. I know that I had one pop out and I poped it back in there. In the Svr manual it talks about replacing them every time the linkage is taken apart. There are like 5 of them and a local dealer quoted me 3.50 for three of them and the other 2 are 31.00 each....LMAO....there is nothing to them. Anyways 91rangerturbo, for mine, when I put it in drive, I can move the shift lever up and down. So much as to see the orange indicator move in and out of the drive, but it stays in Drive. It is just a PITA thing for me. Looking forward to see what comes about this.....
