Could be the serpentine belt or idler pulley. Check the belt for cracks or pieces of ribs missing. Take the belt loose and spin the pulleys by hand to check for roughness or noise.

Could be the exhaust manifold is cracked. Mine would really PING, 3-4 with several clicks in between. I replaced the manifold with an ATS and it is gone.

They start cracking usually on the bottom side of #4 cylinder exhaust (#1 being at the front) and the crack works it's way around to the top of the exhaust pipe. You can see it better with an inspection mirror or from underneath with a flash light.

Engine running or stopped?

Hard to discern from the original post.

(based my exhaust system cooling down on the engine being shut off)

check to make sure that you dont have any exhaust manifold bolts broken off. Mine ticked like crazyyy when I had one broken off. Once I drilled it out and put a new gasket and bolt it, I dont even know that 12 valve is there...

I hear a sound like this on my 05, if you go to the rear of the truck while its idleing I hear a faint but noticable tick...tick...tick, I thought it was an injector going out but its still going 30,000miles strong.
