Greetings all. First time poster but I've lurked frequently. I have run in to a issue with
my CTD and I hope somebody out there has a thought as to what the problem is. My PU is a 02 Ram 2500 Quad 4x4 LB with the HO engine and 6 speed. I've added a BD x-monitor and a Jacobs brake but no performance mods. Currently I have 91K miles with no problems beyond a leaking AC evap. I and **** on PM's so enerything is in good shape. What I'm experiencing is a consistant surge for lack of a better term. It is evident in 4th, 5th, and 6th gears, with or without cruise on, and goes away when coasting. It is easily heard as a change in engine tone on a 2 second period and faintly felt. It seems to mostly happen at normal to light throttle openings (call it 2000 rpm's) with nothing glaringly obvious at wot. I have found that 2000 rpm stopped and out of gear the motor seems to have a slight stumble. My fuel pressure seems to be OK with 14 to 15 at idle (original LP and VP44) and I have a fresh fuel filter. I'm not super confident in the pressure monitor as I've had nothing but trouble with the BD system but all in all it seems OK.
I would appriciate any advice or sugestions anyone has to offer. THanks in advance and thanks for such a nice forum.

I'd check the fuel pressure with another guage.
Even if it is a temporary Briarhopper guage.
That way you'll be confident the Xmonitor is working properly.
Sounds more like a VP44 on it's way out though, timing getting messed up in the middle of the power band.
When mine died, it was just fine at anything other than idle speeds, but wanted to die at idle.
No codes ever thrown and the lift pump was and still is fine.

You might want to try resetting your APPS. Dont know if it could fluctuate like that or just stop working all together. Other than that I really dont know what to tell you. And welcome to the site. Hope all you other questions are better answered than what I just said.
Opps, just noticed you have an exhaust brake. Have you noticed any lack of power or loss in milage either? Dont know how long you have had trouble but you might try checking or cleaning your IAT sensor. Exhaust brakes are notorious for getting the IAT dirty and that can cause trouble.

found in the archives how to get the DTC's using the ignition switch 3 times and I have
the dreaded P0216 there.
Anyone have any thoughts on a good shop / or pump supplier in west texas?
thanks for the help even if the answer sucked

If you have a late 2002, then you should have a 7 year, 100,000 mile engine warranty.
Even if it isn't a late 2002, then you have a 5 year, 100,000 mile warranty.
The injection pump is covered under this warranty.
As you have no modifications short of guages and an exhaust brake, it should be no problem getting it done under warranty.
Even more so since the you have the code showing.
Maybe some fellow west Texans can PM you the name of a nice friendly Dealer to take it to.

My truck threw the same code and has the same symptom. At 1700-2000 RPM, it has a cycling noise, getting louder and then quieter, again and again.
It's the timing moving all around in the VP.
Mine is going in tomorrow morning to the dealer for a pump, I hope.
I took it in last week and they replaced the lift pump and cleared the codes. The VP failure code was back the first day.
They just tried to get off easy by trying just as lift pump at first.

Paulsax,
If your injection pump is not covered by the standard warranty for some reason, Diesel Innovations in northwest Houston is competent. I have used them.
