spark plugs?

I'm not exacty new on the diesel scene , but , i had a guy in my class today telling me that 2000 dodges with the diesel engine used spark plugs?

i know this isn't true , then he tried telling me that it might have been a glow plug , well i told him it wasn;t that either.

any idea's what this moron is talking about?

Tell him that the Cummins engine DOES NOT use either spark plugs or glow plugs. It does however use a 12 volt grid heater that gets very hot below a certain outside air temperature so that it can heat the incoming air to help start the very cold engine. The grid heaters automatically cut out once the engine reaches a predetermined temperature.

How difficult/expensive are these to replace? I have a code that says one of these heaters (is there more than one?) is bad or going bad.

Actually , now that you mention it , he DOES drive a ford.

i tried to no avail to convince him that there were no plugs of any sort , but a grid heater.

He is very persistent in saying that there is indeed spark plugs in the 2000 dodge cummins diesel.

Tell him that, by definition, if it has spark plugs, then it isn't a diesel. A diesel is a compression ignition engine, regardless of who builds it. The Fords used glow plugs as a cold starting assist, but the 2000 Dodge Cummins used intake heater grids. Neither the Ford nor the Dodge diesels ever used spark plugs.

Sigh....

Tell this person that he/she is free to take a look around and challenge this person to find a cap and rotor!

Nope. No "B" series Cummins engines have glow plugs. A lot of them don't even have the toaster grids, and they start fine down into the teens if you plug them in. They just puke lots of stinky white smoke at first.
