Rear differential carnage!
last night i noticed wen i put in reverse it hopped a lil bit.. didnt think much about it. this mornin on the way to work, heard tickin noises. got bak to my truck and looked underneath and oops. three nice bulges on my diff. and oil leaking out. drove it to a shop. and holes got even bigger.. how big a bill or how much work does somethin like this take?? and has anyone else had this problem, or is this just cause my truck has over 200k and its just a wear and tear thing?
A few years ago r&r for a ring and pinion was about $300. Parts ~$200-400. So I'd plan on spending about 6 bills to do it right, new bearings, races, ring and Pinion, shim packs, dif cover etc.
Good luck
Good luck
I just fried my rear pinion bearing and it took out my gears. I'm taking it to a shop that does all my axle work on Monday. It's going to cost me $850.00, but I know he does great work.
I got the dealership quote, just for laughs, $2400.00

Depends on what is wrong with it. At a minimum you will probably need a pinion and gear set, and bearing set. That should be 500+ there for parts. With that many miles you might as well do axle seals, wheel bearings, etc too while it's apart. If it has LSD that might need rebuilt (lots of money there, even more than gears and bearings) add that in.
I feared some major problems with my rear diff a few weeks ago and most I could find in decent shape were 750+ for a used one. I ended up finding one for $475, but it cost a couple hundred bucks to ship it.
You have a Dana 80 from a SRW truck (only manual tranny 2500s got the 80)and if you have disc brakes like me (2001.5 and 2002 models only) it is a rare piece to find. Good luck.

Go to classifieds here @DTR and see if someone has something for sale, or list in wanted. On Ebay there's a guy in Ark. I thing he goes by "partsitout". He may have something.
I rebuilt a Dakota a couple of months ago. It's smaller, not LS and the gears only cost $370 from a dealer. Let you better replace seals, etc.
If you need to locate parts you might try here: Kabele's in Spirit Lake, Iowa has the parts about 1/3 the dealer price. (800-225-6908) I got the spider gear set for the Dakota sent to my door for $130
