rattle in manual trans handle ****

Guys I've got a rattle in the **** of my 6 spd transmission. I found somewhere on the net that said to pry out the shifting pattern with a screw driver and tighten a nut in there. I tried a little but it looked like I was going to damage the plastic that forms the **** around the shifting pattern and the shifting pattern wasn't budging. Any ideas?

Mine did the same thing. If I remember correctly, the **** itself is also threaded on and the nut locks it down. Since the nut must be off since you hear it rattling around, you should be able to unthread the **** and then push the shift pattern piece out from the inside of the ****. You will need to use some force to get the **** off.

So the shift know should just unscrew (with force) ? I'd love to get rid of that stupid black blob with the rotating shift pattern in it.
Anybody know if it's a standard size thread?

The **** will not unscrew until the nut inside of it is removed. The **** is threaded onto the shifter and the nut locks the **** down.
